Better than I expected,
By
This review is from: Priestess (Fushigi Yugi: The Mysterious Play, Vol. 1) (Paperback)
When ever I go looking for a new manga series to start reading, I like to read Amazon.com's reader reviews to help me decide if they're worth buying. In the case of Fushigi Yugi, that back fired. Most of the reviews say something along the lines of 'if you liked Sailor Moon, you'll love Fushigi Yugi!' Well, since I really don't like Sailor Moon, it really turned me off. I am glad to say, though, that Fushigi Yugi is really much better than SM. Number one, the characters are more realistic. Even though we are dealing with that old chesnut of 'magical fourteen year old girls,' Watase sensei manages to pull it off better than most (it's no Inu-Yasha, but few authors/artists compare to my idol, Rumiko Takahashi). Also, I the plot was very engaging; rather like a fairy tale. The artwork was pretty good, too. My only complaint would be that the boys seem too pretty at times(it's time for androgeny, here comes Hotori!), but other than that I liked it.My final analysis, is that it's worth the money. That may sound like sparse praise, but I'm a big cheapskate, so the fact that I have ordered Fushigi Yugi vol 1 & 2 says a lot.

This review is from: Priestess (Fushigi Yugi: The Mysterious Play, Vol. 1) (Paperback)
I LOVE this book! Yu Watase is amazing! But I'm sure you won't just take my word for it and buy this manga, so why don't I explain? The story begins with two friends, Miaka Yuki and Yui Hongo, trying to pass high school entrance exams. Miaka's objective (other than eating every food in sight) is to be accepted into Jonan High School, like her mother would want her to. But the task isn't as simple as passing the test. Unlike her intellgient friend, Yui, Miaka needs to work at it. When the girls go to the National Library, they discover a strange book in a special reference room. (Miaka: "What's a suzaku?") When they open it and begin to read, they are pulled into the story! Inside the book, they are attacked by slave traders and rescued by a mysterious guy. But before they can ask him where they are, they are taken back to the library! Being back in their own world, they decide that the entire situation was all just a dream. However, upon arrival home, Miaka can't stop thinking about her rescuer, so she decides to go back to the library ... If you want to know the rest of the engaging plot, buy the book! The art is exquisite, the plot's complex, there's humor just when you need it, and also, there are little columns in every chapter by Yu Watase! Oh, and let's not forget the strange parodies once in awhile ... Hee-hee! Romance, comedy, mystery, and adventure all in one manga! Get this and you won't be disappointed!

Exquisite artwork, and a captivating story,
This review is from: Priestess (Fushigi Yugi: The Mysterious Play, Vol. 1) (Paperback)
Yu Watase has to be my favorite manga artist of all time because her illustrations are beautifully detailed. This series is a mythical tale of the adventures of Miaka (aka Suzaku no Miko)and her gorgeous (**drools** ^_~) seishi as they try to summon the god Suzaku. In this installment Miaka and Yui are drawn into the Universe of Four Gods, and are saved by a handsome stranger (with a lust for money ^_~). After returing to the modern day world, Miaka re-enters the book, to find her hansome stranger, and so the adventure begins. If you are looking for a manga with beautiful pictures, romance, humour, plenty of bishonen, war, frienship and betrayal (in other words a GREAT story) get this series. You won't regret it.

Great introduction into manga,
By
This review is from: Priestess (Fushigi Yugi: The Mysterious Play, Vol. 1) (Paperback)
This is the first manga/graphic novel I've ever read, and it was fantastic! I'm afraid I can't compare it to anything as, like I said, it was the first, but it's gotten me hooked onto manga now and I have the next two volumes coming already!!Miaka is your average middle school Japanese student trying desperately to get into a good high school. She's not the brightest or the dumbest, she's average in the best sense of the word and a daydreamer to boot. She and her friend Yui end up in the library and find a mysterious book, which after they read the first few pages sends them into a world based on ancient China. After meeting a mysterious young man who saves them from slavers the two girls are whisked back to their own world, but ever-curious Miaka goes back to the library the next day after a fight with her mother and gets transported back to this world. There, she meets back up with the young man, Tamahome, who again saves her, then gets thrown into a dungeon by the emporer after attempting to prove to Tamahome she really wants his company. And then comes the real surprise as to why she's on this world in the first place! This book is great, I definitely recommend it to anyone. I'm glad the first three manga volumes are out, this is something I just don't want to end. The fourth won't be out until July (*sad sniff*) but i've already got it preordered. If you like the anime series, or just want to get into another great Shojo manga, this is definitely for you. Handsome guys, a regular girl like you or me (if you're a girl, if not never mind *g*), and a mystical realm: what more can one ask for? :-)

What can I say? AWESOME!,
This review is from: Priestess (Fushigi Yugi: The Mysterious Play, Vol. 1) (Paperback)
I loved this book! And for what reasons? Well, I loved the characters... either you hate them or love them.. but they're so wonderfully detailed and complex that I loved them all! And soon as you read the first two pages you're immediately hooked... You can indentify with Miaka, and so you're transported along with her in her journeys. Her situations you can indentify with... and so you feel a connection not only to her but to the entire story as well. You find yourself falling in love with the characters. When you put the book down after finishing...well, in my experience... you yell out, "I WANT MORE! " (that's why there is the Oracle handy...) Believe me.. Fushigi Yuugi is worth every single penny that you paid for it

An enjoyable shoujo manga!,
This review is from: Priestess (Fushigi Yugi: The Mysterious Play, Vol. 1) (Paperback)
Watase Yû's Fushigi Yûgi, long a fan favorite in the United States, finally enjoys commerical translation. Originally printed in Japan by publishing giant, Shougakukan under its shoujo manga imprint, "Flower Comics", Fushigi Yûgi ran to a respectable total of 18 compiled volumes. Like most of the shoujo manga that have achieved commerical translation in the United States, Fushigi Yûgi stars a normal, everyday girl that finds herself hurled, in this case, bodily, into a world of magic. The story that ensues is charming, poignant, and, at times, delightfully comic. All shoujo manga focuses upon the human relationships that affect a person's life, and Watase Yû does it beautifully in this, one of her most popular manga. Overall, it is a solid shoujo manga appropriate for a US audience. Viz Communications, the US imprint of Shougakukan, does Fushigi Yûgi justice, lovingly translating jokes and declarations of love and loyalty with equal delicacy. The grammar is good, and the register is consistent, making for a pleasant and unobtrusive reading. In fact, the romanizations of most Chinese words are romanized as Chinese words, not Japanese words, in agreement with Watase Yû, adding to cultural flavor of the tale. The intended audience is clearly middle school girls, but people of all ages can enjoy Fushigi Yûgi. Still, it is worth mentioning that I dislike the final volumes of this lengthy series as the soft porn contained therein is downright distasteful. However, American readers will not have to concern themselves with the weak end of Fushigi Yûgi for a long, long time yet and can continue to enjoy the story at its lovely and early best.

This review is from: Priestess (Fushigi Yugi: The Mysterious Play, Vol. 1) (Paperback)
Now as I have seen from what all of the other reveiws said that Fushigi Yugi was, well a brilliant peace of artwork and so much more. I have the whole series of F.Y. (it's very addicting). It's a wonderful story about two high school girls, Miaka and Yui, who come across a book entitled: The Universe of the Four Gods. As the story continues Yui and Miaka get seperated and, well you'll have to find out for yourself. I reassure you that this story is very unique. It has almost anything you could want in it(romance, tragedy, comedy, ect.) I loved this story and I'm sure you will.
