Book Description

Egypt, 1500 BC

Drawn to his abandoned temple on the banks of the Nile by an enchanting song, Sobek the Crocodile God is even more captivated by the sight of the singer herself. Appearing to her as a man, he learns she is Merys, a descendant of his last priestess. Though filled with lust, Sobek believes Merys deserves to be more than just his mistress. But the rules that govern the Egyptian pantheon forbid anything beyond a physical joining of a Great One and a human.

Merys is attracted to the handsome stranger, who arouses passions in her that no man ever has. But with no dowry and no hope of ever leaving her village, she dares not dream of the future—or love.

Sobek takes every opportunity to visit Merys, taxing his resolve to leave her pure. When he saves her life, their mutual desire must be sated. But can a love between a human and an immortal survive the ultimate test of the gods?

"How doth the little crocodile / Improve his shining tail, / And pour the waters of the Nile,/ On every golden scale!" - Lewis Carroll

Merys spends most of her time on the banks of the Nile near the abandoned temple of the Crocodile God Sobek. as long as she takes care of the household, her stepsisters and provide food on the table, Merys is safe from incurring the wrath of her stepmother. on one occasion, she meets a stranger who captivates her. Bek, in turn, is drawn to her and wants to possess her. little does Merys know that the man is Sobek, the Crocodile God himself.
i have always been fascinated by Egypt and its history - fact or fiction. when i read this book, i was once again lured by the mystery of Egypt's pyramids, temples and its pantheon of gods and goddesses.
author Veronica Scott's novella captured a facet of Ancient Egypt and brought it to life through the eyes of Merys and Sobek.
i love the worldbuilding and how the story flowed. Merys reminds me of Cinderella but instead of a prince, she ends up with a god. the twists and turns were interesting especially the conclusion which i liked a lot.
i would have wanted the story to be longer though but as a whole, the novella was packaged just right.
i recommend this book to readers who love ancient history and mythology. those who need to escape and be transported to a different time and place for a little more than an hour will find in this book the perfect excuse to do so.

3.0 out of 5 stars Reviewed by Read2Review January 7, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a fairly standard romance novel. However, there was a pretty interesting plot to it. The book was 21,000 words (86 pages). With a book this short, plot has to move fast although nothing seemed too forced. The basic plot is that Merys, a priestess of the temple of the Crocodile God, has become a Cinderella in her own home. Her stepmother has her run the household as a slave. Merys meets Bek one evening while collecting fish for her family. They continue to secretly meet for some time and slowly fall in love with each other. They eventually consummate their love after a near-death experience. Merys then finds herself in serious trouble.

I'll let you read it yourself to find out what happens but it was a pretty action packed ending. I was glad to discover that there is a happy ending for all.

I give this book 3.5 out of 5 stars. I would have liked it to be a little longer with some more plot development but I was very impressed with the Egyptian mythology (something I really love) and the different kind of Cinderella story.

A quick read that leaves you with a warm fuzzy feeling. Also, although it is a romance book, it is NOT erotica. The
"consummation" is handled tastefully.

4.0 out of 5 stars good, short historical romance December 17, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
The setting here is ancient Egypt, along the banks of the Nile River. Merys is the daughter of the village scribe and her mother (now deceased) was once a priestess of Sobek, the Crocodile God, an Egyptian deity no longer in favor with the powers that be. She now has a stepmother and half-siblings - read here the Cinderella story - but still sings the old songs to Sobek, who appears to her in human form. This is a forbidden love story, well written that places the reader right alongside the Nile. A good novella.

More About the Author

Veronica Scott grew up in a house with a library full of books as its heart, and when she ran out of things to read, she started writing her own stories. Married young to her high school sweetheart then widowed, Veronica has two grown daughters, one young grandson and cats.

Veronica's life has taken many twists and turns, but she always makes time to keep reading and writing. Everything is good source material for the next novel or the one after that anyway, right? She's been through earthquakes, tornadoes and near death experiences, although nothing is as stressful as meeting a book deadline. Always more stories to tell, new adventures to experience--Veronica's personal motto is, "Never boring."
