Killah Priest returns with his third album, Priesthood. Although I enjoyed Priesthood, becuase it is five times better than last years View From Masada, it still could use some work. The production of the album is really cheap and boring, there are no standout beats that force you to feel the song, the producers only attempt to make heartfelt beats. I have been a Killah...

4.0 out of 5 stars Right Perspective, September 3, 2001
This review is from: Priesthood (Audio CD)
Return of Masada the Beloved...but he did it right this time. While Heavy Mental was raw and unaplogetic (and still Priest's best work), and View From Masada was...well, a little too fruity as far as beats go, Priesthood is a successful melding of the two. The beats here aren't as gritty as a lotta joints off Heavy Mental, but they're good. Lyrically, Priest has never lost his touch. With one of the best rhyme structures in Hip Hop, K.P.'s flow will hold your attention every time even if the beat doesn't. Personally, I was disappointed that "Places Where Pharoah's Go" (recorded in similar fashion to the track "Heavy Mental") is so short compared to it's predecessor. That fact doesn't really take away from the album, but had it been longer it coulda added something. But yo, Priest shines again, and shows a lotta promise for things to come. Priesthood, at least lyrically if not musically, is one of the best pieces of work in Hip Hop this year. If you don't love lyrics, and aren't inclined to spiritual things, then leave this album alone. Otherwise, pick it up.

5.0 out of 5 stars best album i own, July 18, 2001
This review is from: Priesthood (Audio CD)
The messiah has come...killah priest lays down some of the most complex and deepest lyrics I've ever heard and the beats arent too bad either. This is one of the few cds I own that every song on it is fire. This cd is absolutly sick pick it up as soon as you can you wont be disapointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars 4 stars from me is above and beyond most 4 star ratings, March 14, 2002

A 4 star album here. This album is not a 3.5 stars or a 4.5 star rating. Just a pure simple 4 star rating. 4 star rating from me is astonishing.

Killah Priest is a well self educated emcee. "Priesthood" is his best album to date and will probably be either his last or next to last album. He might bless us with one more. His last album effort "View from Masada" was not exactly what Killah Priest fans expected. His first album "Heavy Mental" is above most hip-hop albums.

There are tracks on Priesthood that make this album shine. Timeless cuts like "My Life" and "My Hood" with a few others, but also there are a few tracks that are not exactly great material. Tracks like "Heat of the Moment" and "Theme Song" but overall this album is nice considering what hip-hop has become lately.

Priesthood breaks down the basic facts of street life and the struggle of religion. If you wish to elevate your mind and catch a heavy mental of what hip-hop should be more like, then check this album out. When you check it out, listen to it a few times before you make a decision of how ill this work of art really can be.

I have been a Killah Priest fan since I heard him on the Gza's tape and I try to support everything he does, but this album is not too great. As usual, Killah Priest spits exceptional lyrics with a spiritual twist, and even though his lines are not as deep as his first album, Heavy Mental, he does showcase his ridiculous skill.
The albums drawback, aside from WEAK production is the monotony of subject matter. The only true standout track is the joint featuring the Four Horsemen. The rest of the album seems to be an attempt to remake Heavy Mental. It's a decent album, but I know Killah Priest can do better.

Although this cant touch his Dominant Classic "Heavy Mental." However I enjoyed some of the tracks on this one. Nothing can be taken away from Killah Priest's multi talents. He's my favorite Emcee out there.

4.0 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars from Priest for his 3rd solo, June 2, 2005
By
This review is from: Priesthood (Audio CD)
After one year since he dropped "View From Masada" (my personal favorite of his 4 albums) Priest returns with my least favorite of his four, but still a 3.5 star rating. His lyrics are on point as always, dark and religiously aware, but the production is lacking a lot on this one, other then a few tracks most are only ok. Nirocist does 7 of the 15 songs, Luminati does 4, Nastee does 2, Pedrom, Daddy Rose, Amended Masters all do 1. It has 1 classic, 1 almost classic song, 4 I skip, 3 are ok, the rest are good. No Wu members are a part of the album, guest rap on 2 songs and do a few hooks. A good album to have for fans of his but not his best work.

#1 - 5 (slow screwed up version of the song)
#2 - 8
#3 - 9 (f/ Amber Alxzis -- about his hood)
#4 - 9.5 (great song f/ 4 Horsemen -- Killah Priest, Kurupt, Canibus, Ras Kass)
#5 - 8.5 (f/ George Clinton)
#6 - 10 (CLASSIC w/ great beat)
#7 - 7.5
#8 - 8
#9 - 8.5
#10 - 7.5 (f/ Ty-N)
#11 - 6
#12 - 8.5 (f/ Maccabees Rose Carel)
#13 - 7.5
#14 - 5.5 (basically acapella freestyle)
#15 - 8
#16 - 6 (slower song)
