4.0 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Book for Priest, Seminarian, or Layman
This book is NOT just for priests or seminarians!

It is FOR LAYMEN.

An outstanding piece of literature on how we can live faithful Christian lives in the midst of a sinful world. In these pages Msgr. Dolan shares his rector's conferences from the North American Colleg in Rome where he helps to train men for the Catholic Priesthood.

Covering topics from Faith, Hope,...

2.0 out of 5 stars A dissenting opinion
I read this book 4 years ago and recently re-read the chapter on "Joy". It's hard to give a rating that goes against the general enthusiasm for this book but the nagging feeling hasn't left in the last 4 years and reading it again just made me realised that I should write something.

There's generally nothing wrong in the content. The man is probably a saint...

4.0 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Book for Priest, Seminarian, or Layman, January 17, 2001

This review is from: Priests for the Third Millennium (Hardcover)
This book is NOT just for priests or seminarians!

It is FOR LAYMEN.

An outstanding piece of literature on how we can live faithful Christian lives in the midst of a sinful world. In these pages Msgr. Dolan shares his rector's conferences from the North American Colleg in Rome where he helps to train men for the Catholic Priesthood.

Covering topics from Faith, Hope, and Love to Joy, Simplicity of Life, and Integrity, Msgr. Dolan shares his experiences of trying to live these virtues and ways of the Christian life in our times. His object in these pages is to show his seminarians how to live heroic Christian lives. This book is one of the best I have read--hard to put it down once you've picked it up.

An excellent devotional!

I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Spiritual Guide for Seminarians and Priests, September 7, 2001

This review is from: Priests for the Third Millennium (Hardcover)
This book is a collection of 24 spiritual conferences which Msgr Dolan as Rector gave the seminarians of the North American College, Rome. They cover almost every aspect of the life of the Catholic priest of this millennium, who has to respond to his call to holiness in the challenging circumstances of our society and culture. Each conference is very practical and pastoral in content, originating from Msgr. Dolan's rich and varied pastoral experience and deep understanding of priests and seminarians. The talks are interspersed with stories from his own life, quotes from writings of saints and popes along with profound spiritual insights. His depth of faith, scholarly wit and love for priesthood make the book easily readable and thoroughly enjoyable. Msgr. Dolan currently serves the Church as a bishop.

Whoever is concerned for the welfare of priests in this millennium would need to own and treasure this book. Indeed, it is a must-read for seminarians and priests who desire to live a faithful priestly life.

This review is from: Priests for the Third Millennium (Hardcover)
This book is amazing!!! Not only for current priests or those discerning or even entertaining the idea, but it's great for anyone! For the Catholic layman OR laywoman, it's an awesome collaboration of writings from Saints and Doctors of this Church, covering everything from Faith to why Confession Matters! This guy says nothin new, but he's put together all the stuff that we need to hear!! Even for a man or woman of another faith, this book definitely helps to refine any Christian, and can give anyone a good idea as to what the good Catholic should, if he already isnt, feelin'.

4.0 out of 5 stars Extremely Practical Advise for All, December 2, 2007
This review is from: Priests for the Third Millennium (Hardcover)
This is a fine book that frankly should be mandatory reading for all. The title gives the impression that the book is aimed at priests. It's actually a series of lectures/essays on the virtues give to seminarians. The advice given is rock solid, practical, and inspiring. It is applicable to all: young, old, men, women, atheists, priests. While firmly rooted in Catholicism, the practicality of the Golden Rule doesn't discriminate based on creed.

One of the reviewers took the book to task for lacking scriptural quotes. I don't think he read the book carefully. Each chapter includes a scriptural notation in the header, and the text itself is peppered throughout with scriptural notations. The serious reader will have his Bible at hand to follow up on the cites.

I give this work of Archbishop Dolan top marks. Even after many years in the Priesthood I found this a very valuable impetus to my enthusiasm for my spirituality and for my pastoral work.

I recommend it very highly to Priests and Seminarians. It is extremely challenging but refreshing and I think that is what we need if we want to be more effective in our vocation as Pastors. I wish I could make it compulsory reading in every Seminary!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sturdy Roots, May 14, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Priests for the Third Millennium (Hardcover)
Archbishop Dolan's conferences, given first to the students of the North American College in Rome and then adapted for all clerics in this book, is a welcome addition to the library of any priest in the Third Millennium.

Theologically sound as well as practical, his insights into the fundamentals of human growth are integrated into the spiritual life of priets. What he presents comes from the sacred texts, the documments of the Church, and from his personal experiences.

I believe that you will find in these pages a source of purpose and a sense of resolve for priests to lead lives of genuine commitment to the promises and vows made at their ordination, no matter how many years ago.

An excellent read for anyone striving to grow in holiness. Although directed to seminarians, it can easily be read as a practical guidebook to holiness for people in any station of life. The text is clear and easy to read. It includes many interesting and memorable stories to illustrate the major points being presented. Make sure you buy the hardcover version; this is a book you will be reading over and over again. Thanks for the treasure Archbishop Dolan!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Good Guide to Formation, February 7, 2004

Franz S. Klein (St. Paul, MN United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Priests for the Third Millennium (Hardcover)
Archbishop Dolan has given the Church a great gift in publishing the spiritual and formation conferences he gave while the rector of the North American College in Rome.

The archbishop's style is readable and light-hearted, yet conveys the solemn holiness of the priesthood to whoever browses the pages of the book.

This book is excellent reading for those currently in formation, those considering the priesthood, and those who want to have a better picture of the great gift of the life of a priest.
