Review

Millie Criswell's incomparable Flowers of the West Trilogy continues with the rip-roaring finale, Prim Rose. Just as surely as readers fell in love with Heather and Laurel, they will adore Rose Elizabeth, the youngest of the extraordinary Martin sisters. Bound for the train station and spoiling to have it out with the stuffy English aristocrat that dared to buy the Martin homestead out from under her, Rose Elizabeth is stopped dead in her tracks at first sight of the handsome Duke of Moreland. Shaken, but far from defeated, Rose shows that just like her namesake she is prone to a few thorns of her own. Alexander Warrick has never, in all of his blue-blooded days, seen the likes of this obstinate farm girl standing before him, declaring her intent to stay put on his newly acquired land and actually daring him to do something about it. He instantly admires the chit's tenacity, as well as her other more feminine attributes. Coming to a truce, it is decided that Rose Elizabeth will stay on to prepare the meals and help with the daily chores in exchange for the right to remain on the beloved land that once belonged to her family. When his complete lack of farming skills becomes apparent, along with painfully close proximity day in and day out, Alexander makes another offer of a far more carnal nature. Rose's resolve never to share the man's bed, suffers as a growing attraction for one another leads to forbidden passion. Alexander's only link to a tortured past shows up unexpectedly on their doorstep. Rose Elizabeth comes face to face with the duke's forsaken fiancé, exhausted from her journey from England and seven months pregnant. In a stunning crescendo, all three Martin sisters are brought back to Selina, Kansas, the land where they were raised, to rally behind Rose and her struggle for love in her personal pursuit of a dream. No one blends home-spun humor, multi-dimensional characters, and sensuous fantasy like Millie Criswell! Ms. Criswell's pen is skillful and sure, proving she's one of the best in the western romance genre. Once again, Millie Criswell dazzles us with her unique ability to give us stories we can experience, celebrating the vitality of the human spirit.Lori Wright -- Copyright © 1994-97 Literary Times, Inc. 4.0 out of 5 stars Spirited Americana, May 17, 2000
This review is from: Prim Rose (Mass Market Paperback)
Rose Martin's family farm has been sold to an English duke, and Rose is supposed to be on her way to Boston to go to Finishing School. Rose does not care about becoming a Proper Young Lady; she wants to stay and farm her family's land. Of course, she is s ure the duke won't stay long once he sees that Kansas is not England--no temperate climate, no exciting diversions, no life of leisure: just a lot of hard work.

Alexander Warrick, Duke of Moreland, wants to take an extended vacation in America, and has purchased a country estate to that end--but he was expecting cool trees, not barren heat. The young lady who still lives on the farm is entirely improper, not kno wing the correct way to behave towards her betters. Nevertheless, Alexander is determined not to go back to England yet--he needs time away from the decisions that face him there.

It's obvious to Rose that Alexander knows nothing of farming, so she stays on to help him, hoping that he will soon be driven away and her beloved farm will once again be hers--and Alexander has no argument since he can't even milk the cow. As they share chores on the farm and the small sod house Rose grew up in, they get on each other's nerves more and more--but also intrigue each other. The third and final book of Millie Criswell's Flowers of the West trilogy is as delightful as the first two. (And no, you don't have to read the other two first.) Rose is a gem--wonderfully outspoken, determined to think and act for herself. Secondary characters and setting add to the charming tone of the story; plot twists keep the reader wondering. PRIM ROSE is a spirited picture of Americana, full of sexual tension and sensuality.

By A Customer
This review is from: Prim Rose (Mass Market Paperback)
Prim Rose was extremely enjoyable. It is full of wit, humour, love and passion. It is preferable to read the two books preceding this one in the trilogy because Ms Criswell offers us a wonderful surprise reunion towards the end of Prim Rose. The Flowers of the West Trilogy will guarantee to make you sigh with a smile!
