5.0 out of 5 stars A must for little girls! September 22, 2010
After reviewing Prima Princessa Swan Lake (see my review here), I wanted to have my girls watch Prima Princessa presents The Nutcracker before the Christmas Season rolled around. Once again, I am extremely pleased with this video as it the story is narrated while the professional ballerinas, from the Birmingham Royal Ballet, perform the dance. Then, the scene is recapped at breaks while instructors teach dance steps to young, budding ballerinas, playing in the yard or house. Each of the acts is divided into two parts, giving little ones a chance to watch, then learn a dance step and get up and dance themselves. The various steps that are demonstrated are passé, glissade, sauté, sauté arbaresque, and echappe sauté. I love how the producers show the words as they pronounce them as well. The video runs about one hour, and easily captivates little ones, especially with the breaks to get up and dance. There are also bonus features, such as arm positions and Port de Bras, a holiday party, holiday freeze dancing and holiday crafts.
The website, [...], has some great coloring pages and activities for little ones, too.

This is such an adorable and educational video for little ones and would make a wonderful present or stocking stuffer for girls ages 3-7.

Disclosure: I received a free copy of this from Prima Princessa Productions in exchange for my honest review.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fun New Twist to a Classic! September 29, 2010
One of my favorite Christmas memories is going to the local presentation of The Nutcracker every December. I was so enamored with it as a little girl that I signed up for ballet one year just so I could play a part in it! I have missed seeing it since I moved away from home and hope to take Amber some day.

Because of all that I was really excited to get to review Prima Princessa Presents the Nutcracker. It provided me a way to show Amber The Nutcracker in a way that was fun and easy for her to understand at her age now! She loved dancing along to it (as you can see!) and I was impressed with the gorgeous costumes & scenery during the ballet which I guess is not surprising considering it's the Birmingham Royal Ballet preforming. Like the other Prima Princessa DVD the breaks were cute and fun and Amber and I both really enjoyed it! This would make a perfect Christmas gift and you can't beat the $6.99 price tag!!! I highly recommend getting it for the little ballerina in your life!

5.0 out of 5 stars We love it! September 12, 2009
Just as the previous Swan Lake video, this DVD is broken down into different segments alternating between the Nutcracker performance and learning ballet steps. Once again, this movie gets my daughter up, moving, interacting. The extras include the different beginning arm positions that they cleverly describe looks like a flower blooming. My 2.5 year old daughter absolutely loves these movies (has been watching them since 1.5), and we enjoy them as adults as well. Prima Princessa movies are top favorites at our house!

Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I purchased this DVD as part of a Christmas gift for my nearly 4 year old goddaughter, who has become fascinated with ballet. I wanted her to see a good version of The Nutcracker, and chose this version because of 2 things:
1) It was narrated with story to help her understand what was going on
2) It had some breaks for 'dance lessons' which would be right up her ally, since she's always trying to copy what she's seeing done by other dancers.

The narration was the best part, and really did well with the Royal Ballet's performance to tell the story at an age appropriate level. The dancing was superb. (I would not have recommended the close ups of the 'magic tricks' because the moment the camera zoomed in for 'artsy' close ups, you saw the strings and the magic was gone ><) All in all the sections featuring the professional show are wonderful, and exactly what I'd hoped for.

However, the parts of the show in which there were real children dancing were poorly executed and showed low production values. There were a few steps shown in a ballet studio by capable older children who obviously took dance. But the steps chosen to 'teach' were all rather random overall. The other children who were showcased as the fairy's friends who all liked to dance and wanted to watch the show... nothing they did looked much like what the children who'd actually had a dance class were showing. And then they took that segment and REPEATED IT after the fairy yelled "encore!" and even my 3 year old was bored the second time around since it was the EXACT SAME THING! In fact, the first time it happened, I thought the DVD had accidentally skipped!

Bottom line, it wasn't something I'd want to watch again, though I might have to if she wants to see the story again. But for the price, I felt like I'd pretty much gotten value for the dollar. Which is to say that it was cheap, in both soul and $$$.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun to watch for children and adults September 28, 2010
By Jenny H
I love Christmas and I love The Nutcracker. Unfortunately, where we live opportunities do not abound for seeing this ballet live, and with two little ones, it's hard to get to any cultural event. I am happy to share this with my daughters (3 and 1) at home until we finally do get to take them to see more things. This version of the Nutracker, shortened and with breaks for dancing here and there, is fun for them and holds their attention. My three-year-old, Suzi, tries out the suggested dance steps, and a little while ago as they watched together, I noticed 13-month-old Ivey twirling in circles as well! They are cute to watch.

Not only is this a fun outlet for a kid's energy and a good alternative to turning on a movie which will keep them seated on the couch, it also reinforces some of the same dance steps Suzi is learning in her dance class. Glissade, in particular, is something not all the girls immediately grasp in class, and now Suzi has extra motivation to practice it at home. I was pleased at how the dance steps featured on this DVD are different from the ones in Prima Princessa Presents Swan Lake. It's a totally new program. I'd definitely recommend adding this one to your collection.
