Book Description

February 17, 2009
In this unique ground breaking and enlightening book, Nora Gedgaudas provides a sane departure from conventional thinking about nutrition as promoted in the media and by conventional diet pundits. You will at last come to truly understand the basic principles of how your body and brain function based on both fundamental human physiology and the ancient selective pressures that shaped it. You'll also come to appreciate how these same selective pressures came to establish our most basic nutritional requirements-your key to health and freedom from disease. Never again be confused-or fooled-by misleading or conflicting dietary information! This is NOT just another book about "caveman diets" or "low carb eating". Although these topics are covered, there is a unique "twist" to the material that will have you seeing your health and your diet in a way you never have before. Fasten your seatbelts. This is not a conventional paradigm...It is most certainly outside the conventional box you were always told was the true picture (the same conventional box that is dedicated to supporting the corporate interests of the food, medical, pharmaceutical and even supplement industries). This book reaches credibly across disciplines and gives you the greater "aha!" of how various aspects of health actually fit together-including aspects of diet, physiology, modern anti-aging research, weight loss, supplementation, brain health, mental health, and even physical fitness. More than this, you will also come to understand where nature's most basic intent may not always be compatible with our own and how to apply information provided by the latest in science and human longevity research to live longer, healthier and more vibrant lives than you ever before thought possible. Regardless of whether you're already healthy and want to improve that, or whether you're trying to lose weight or reclaim your health from whatever is challenging you, this book will be an indispensable tool. Finally, learn how to apply these new and ancient principles in a way that will not only save you from the pitfalls and economic devastation of the "disease care industry", but also potentially save you hundreds, if not thousands of dollars on your grocery bills, as well. Primal Body-Primal Mind is truly the ultimate health approach for the "new economy" and for the New Millenium!

Editorial Reviews

Review

“With this book, she [Nora Gedgaudas] moves the diet discussion into the world of evolutionary science.”
(Anna Jedrziewski, New Age Retailer, March 2011 )

“Nora Gedgaudas is a warrior fighting for our collective health. For 2.6 million years humans knew what to eat: animal fat and protein. On that diet, we grew tall, strong, and disease-free. That primal pattern is still there, laid down like a labyrinth circling out of our DNA, and Nora is ready to guide us. This book is fabulous.”
(Lierre Keith, author of The Vegetarian Myth )

“As an investment advisor, I stress the importance of health to my clients and subscribers. Why is that? Because a clear mind and strong body are the first step to creating and keeping your wealth, whether it is personal or financial. Yes, we can understand how our mind and bodies function! Yes, we can feed ourselves the nutritious food that makes us powerful! Nora Gedgaudas’s Primal Body, Primal Mind teaches you essential knowledge you need to survive and thrive in the 21st century.”
(Catherine Austin Fitts, founder and managing member of Solari Investment Advisory )

“These days, hormones are a hot topic. In Primal Body, Primal Mind, Gedgaudas focuses on those hormones that are commonly imbalanced and problematic to the American population, contributing to symptoms such as weight gain, low energy, poor mood, and even premature aging. In clear and simple terms Nora describes the root of these problems and outlines solutions that are effective and easy to apply. This is the book you want to read.”
(Janet R. Lang, D.C., author, educator, and founder of Restorative Endocrinology )

Primal Body, Primal Mind covers a wide range of health topics but ties them all back to one central idea: physically, we are virtually identical to our Paleolithic ancestors. We may drive minivans and listen to modern jazz on iPods, but our bodies and brains haven’t really evolved past the Stone Age. Overall, an excellent read and an excellent resource.”
(Tom Naughton, comedian, former health writer, and creator of Fat Head )

“It’s a health plan so easy even an unga bunga caveman can do it! Gedgaudas uses humor, science-based facts, and common sense to debunk many of the myths we have been told about weight and health control in the 21st century. In the world of healthy high-fat, low-carb nutrition research and education, this is yet another book to complement your healthy lifestyle change.”
(Jimmy Moore, author of Livin’ la Vida Low Carb )

“Nora explores where our dietary requirements originated and how they affect our mood and vulnerability to diseases and explains the complex issues of nutrient assimilation, digestion gluten sensitivity, and celiac disease. Find out if you’re a fat burner or a sugar burner, learn the bad news about gluten, soy, milk proteins, and the nutritional bases for depression, ADHD, and other common disorders. This book is so much more than another ‘what to eat’ book.”
(Julie Holland, M.D., author of The Pot Book and Weekends at Bellevue )

“Every so often, you encounter a gem among the dross competing for your attention. Such is the case with Primal Body, Primal Mind, written by Nora Gedgaudas.”
(Mark Steinberg, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist and Clinical Neuropsychologist  )

“Nora Gedgaudas’ Primal Body, Primal Mind is a must read . . .”
(Vincent Samatowic, M.Ed., Biotics Research and Nutritional Research )

“Nora Gedgaudas has loaded Primal Body, Primal Mind with the information and resources essential for anyone who hopes to survive the 21st century in mental and physical health.”
(Julia Ross, author of The Diet Cure and The Mood Cure and executive director of the Recovery Systems Clinic )

“I consider Nora’s work to be the definitive statement on the nutritional needs of the brain. It is required reading for all of my patients and for anyone with an interest in maintaining their own vitality throughout their life.”
(Glen Zielinski, D.C., D.A.C.N.B., assistant professor of clinical neurology at Carrick Institute for Graduate Studies )

“Nora Gedgaudas lights a path toward dietary discretion and natural health that obliterates much of the standard dietary doctrine along the way. Larger truths have a tendency to be simple. It is so here as well.”
(Siegfried Othmer, Ph.D., coauthor of ADD: The 20-Hour Solution and chief scientist at the EEG Institute )

“When you read Nora’s work, rest assured you are not reading a regurgitated version of whatever is in fashion, but instead the careful harvest of decades of careful research, application and observation .”
(Elaine Fawcett, MJ., NT., Health Journalist and Nutritional Therapist )

“. . . Primal Body, Primal Mind reveals how the coming of agriculture resulted in a marked decline in stature, bone density, dental health, with a corresponding rise in birth defects, malnutrition, and disease directly related to an agriculturally-based life style. . . Primal Body Primal Mind is an enthusiastically recommended addition to personal, academic, and community library Health & Nutrition instructional reference collections.” (Midwest Book Review, August 2011 )

“If you are serious about changing your eating habits to a healthier regimen, you should consider reading Primal Body, Primal Mind. Following Gedgaudas’ suggestions will not only give you a healthier body but also a clearer and more functional mind.” (ReaderViews, August 2011 )

“. . . it is splendid and solid . . .”
(LewRockwell.com, August 2011 )

“In addition to addressing large health issues with clarity and precision, Gedgaudas provides step-by-step guidelines and meal recommendations, giving her work even more utility, while tossing in moments of humor for good measure.”
(ForeWord Magazine, September 2011 )

“This book provides a range of new information. It is an excellent resource for those of us who believe in the importance of grass fed animal fats as a crucial source of Omega-3.”
(Bruce Ward, Holistic Results, November 2011 )

“If you want to really know about how your brain and body work, read this book!”
(Thom Hartmann, author of The Edison Gene: ADHD and the Gift of the Hunter Child )

“This is one of the best health information books I have read in a long time.”
(Annette Epifano, New Connexion, November 2011 ) --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

From the Author

This new extraordinary edition of Primal Body, Primal Mind has been substantially refined, updated, meticulously scientifically edited and reformatted with extra chapters and new additional illustrations.  The few nay-saying comments posted to this site are mostly based on the earlier edition of this book which lacked the current edition's refinement.

No one book can possibly please everybody--and Primal Body, Primal Mind challenges a lot of comfortable assumptions (even slaying and barbequing a few sacred cows along the way)---but most of those who found fault with the previous edition will find their complaints here can no longer apply.  In fact, I've used much of the prior constructive criticism as a helpful tool to elevate Primal Body, Primal Mind to a whole new standard of excellence.

I am quite proud of this new edition.  I hope you enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Have Never Met Nora Gedgaudas, but I plan to annually send her a THANK YOU note, September 2, 2010

This review is from: Primal Body-Primal Mind: Empower Your Total Health The Way Evolution Intended (...And Didn't) (Paperback)

Primal Body--Primal Mind: Empower Your Total Health The Way Evolution Intended by Nora Gedgaudas;

All the other five-star reviewers have covered what's in this book, but I want my 3 minutes to sing praises too!

This book is off the charts, I'd give it 10 stars if I could. I only just got Primal Body a few weeks ago and have barely started to implement some changes here and there in my already fairly excellent diet. Still, I am already sleeping better, feeling far fewer fluctuations from normal in the digestive, circulatory and nervous systems. My skin is smoother, too. And, I know, without a doubt, the guidance and resources provided by Nora's book will extend my life and provide for a much higher quality of life as well. When I got to page 88 I quit reading and ordered a case of books, one for each family member and various best friends and neighbors.

I'm a health nut from way back, always telling my friends the latest about Omega-3's, the horrors of trans-fats, the crucial need for Vitamin D and more. I learned most of it first from my sister, I admit, but I found Barry Sears by myself. My sis actually has a 1938 publication by Weston Price, and first got going with Adele Davis. I've read countless books, magazine articles, newsletters, and manuals trying to understand what's what. I'd trade all I've ever read about diet, nutrition, and health food for this book. This is a reference book that I will be leaning on for years to come.

I almost did not order this book when I first heard about. First, I couldn't find it in a local bookstore, then when I found it here on Amazon, a couple of reviewers had concerns that gave me pause, and I passed on it. A few weeks later I spent the weekend with my friend, Phyllis, who had recommended the book to me in an email. Phyllis is one of the clearest thinkers and analysts I know, and after telling me more she said, "Everyone needs to read this book." So I ordered it. I am so glad!!

Nora has the most delightful personality, her writing reflects it wonderfully. Her narrative is funny, engaging, and easy to read even when she is talking about some fairly complicated bio-chemical situations. She makes complex and confusing things understandable. Yes, sometimes I did have to read some sections a couple of times to get it, but making extremely complex things clear is one of Nora's great gifts. A couple of minor typos are not a problem for me, unlike for a couple of reviewers who marked down for them. (He who is without grammar or spelling issues may caste the first stone, I certainly will not.)

I am a sixty-one year old mom who has read enough about nutrition to know that Nora did an astonishing amount of reading, analyzing, and synthesizing to sift the truth from the incomplete, false, intentionally misleading, and otherwise wrong information. There are so many references in the back of the book, it makes my head hurt. It would have taken her twice as long to write this masterpiece if she had forced herself to cite all her reference to every statement made in this book. The richness of advice here is utterly mind-boggling, it is enough, for me, that Nora has tiny details referenced in her head. She CLEARLY understands the big picture. (Plus there are countless general references in the back of the book!)

We need nutrient rich foods to sustain us in these stressful times (which I think are only going to get more stressful in the near term, before getting better again). If we want to give our children and grand-children optimum potential we need to pay attention. We who are of retirement age do not want to be dealing with cancer, memory loss, heart disease, immobility, or any of the other myriad of syndromes that nutrition can either eliminate or mediate.

Young or old, I honestly don't think there is a better book to use as your guide to maintaining your physical or mental health.

I even love the book's cover; I am always in awe of beautiful art that is thousands of years old!

Nora's great gift is to synthesize information as a generalist while having tremendous in-depth understanding of so many specialties. She has walked the walk. Her website is absolutely terrific too.

Amazon readers are always told "If you liked this book, you will like _______" I didn't think it was possible to have another book out there as good as this one, but Catherine and Luke Shanahan (she's an MD) wrote one: Deep Nutrition: Why Your Genes Need Traditional Food. These two books are joined at the hip. They fit together perfectly with minimal duplication. They both give jaw-dropping insights into who we are bio-chemically, and what we can do to survive in a world where profits drive food production and medical care.

If you don't have heath care (I mean "sick care"), BUY these books. You'll be fine, unless lightening strikes.

The best money you will ever spend on your health (or on any two books) is the money you will spend when you right this minute order both these books. You will not regret it and you will be wondering why no one else has told you about them. (They are new books, and you are the trail-blazers on this.) I have already thanked my friend Phyllis four times for telling me about them, and I've only owned them for three weeks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gives you the foundation to build a new and improved you, June 24, 2011
2 positives:

One: It's well researched and really digs deep into background information on health and how hormonal imbalances are the main cause for being unhealthy and getting fat. Lots of interesting information.

Two: Helps you to develop a new mindset for being healthy in a world that makes it profitable for you to be unhealthy. Then as you unlock a new healthier you, the weight will come off naturally without much effort.

2 negatives:

One: This is a big book. I felt it got a little long-winded with information we didn't necessarily need. But Nora wanted to cover all her bases, so that's not a big negative. I just prefer short books.

Two: The information on exercise was ho-hum. Nothing that I haven't seen before.

Pairing up the unique information from The 5-Second Flat Belly Secret - Lose 2-3 Inches from Your Belly in Less Than 1 Month with this would've taken this book to the next level since you need more than diet and supplements for total health and weight loss.

The gist: This is more than just a diet or weight loss book. This is a book that breaks things down so you have the foundation to build a new and improved you. That's more important than some magical diet.

I give this book 4 stars. It's worth buying.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fabulous compilation of facts, April 12, 2009
This review is from: Primal Body-Primal Mind: Empower Your Total Health The Way Evolution Intended (...And Didn't) (Paperback)
Primal Body-Primal Mind is a fabulous compilation of FACTS not fads about the nutritional needs of the human body. By reading this book you will understand how our culture has gotten away from eating the foods we were meant to eat and learn what your body truly needs to not only exist, but to thrive. If you find yourself getting lost in the fodder the general media spews about food and nutrition, come back to Nora's book for a clear understanding about the physiology of the body and its nutritional needs. You can't help but wrap your mind around the information in this book and feel an intuitive desire to follow the words put forth. It is an inspiration. I keep Nora's book on the surface to lend to friends and clients when answers are needed about the fundamentals of proper nutrition. Check out her website for delicious recipes and more information.
