Sofia Huniya does not know who she is, or what she is, until she is shown the truth about her heritage. She is a Wolf Tamer, a member of a clan who can control werewolves. It is this talent, at least in part, that draws Jason Cage, the vampire Prime known as the Beast Master, to her. His talent lies in taming ordinary wolves, but once, he also tamed feral werewolves. Now, with Sofia's cousin missing and a group of supremist, modern Nazi, bitten werewolves out to use Sofia and her cousin to found a new master race, Jason will have to make serious choices that could land him in jail or worse to save the woman he loves and perhaps the world.
**** With every new entry in this series, the world of the Primes grows more complex and intriguing. It is fantastic to see Jason get his own story after his intriguing entrance as a "guest star" in the last one. Seeds are sown in this novel that should bear fruit for many novels to come, and readers are very fortunate to be able to reap the reward. ****

Primal Desires suffers from lack of focus, too many threads, un-interesting flashbacks, and from too many characters stealing the spotlight from the main romance. Where I normally enjoy the complexity and depth that multiple threads bring to a story, here the threads are superficial and the switching back and forth between so many different characters and flashing back not only bogged down the pace, but also left no room for the interesting scene I would have loved to see -- the rescue of Sofia's father.
Jason is a wonderful character introduced in Sizemore's Primal Heat, who had a glamorous life as a Vegas star and who's painful past separated him from the rest of the Primal world. None of that is brought into this book and it keeps his romance from having the depth it could have. Sophia is ok, but not developed enough to feel like she is really worthy of Jason. Fortunately the mate-bond is blind and chemistry is all that matters anyway. One thread deserved to have its own book - Mike and Cathy's romance. If Sizemore had some how integrated Justin and Sofia's romance and her development into a were-tamer into Justin's glitzy stage world, then the whole Nazi werewolf plot could have been Mike and Cathy's book. Theirs is the story I would have like to have read more of. Sizemore could have milked the pathos - exploiting Mike's conflict between his feelings for Cathy and his duty to the were-kind as Tracker. Shown him on the edge of sliding back into alcoholism, with Cathy redeeming him in the end. The Bleythrin werewolve/detective brothers have been under-utilized in the Sizemore's last two books -- and that doesn't change here -- it was disappointing that Mike and Cathy didn't get their fair screen time. If you are new to the Prime series do not start with this book, it doesn't stand alone well. Except for the heroine and the bad guys, all the other characters have been introduced in the previous two books and with all the other stuff going on in this book there was no attempt to bring a new reader up to speed. None of the old characters are fleshed out here. Sizemore also assumes that you are familiar with the Prime world and the rules of its vamp and were societies. If you don't care if your romances have a great plot with fleshed out characters, there is plenty of steamy stuff to fill the pages. I may buy Sizemore's next book, which will likely be Sidonie's story, but I won't rush out to buy it new.

Not worth reading,

Lately I have noticed authors making really long series and having the story lines for the next novel begun in the one before. I find this very distracting from the story line.
That said...this book is horrible. The story line is weak and there are SO many characters in the book that it is sometimes hard to keep track of who is saying or thinking what. There are at least 4 romances going on at the same time as well which I also hated. The main characters are only in about half the novel and you never really get to connect with them or see them bond. Sid is in this book a lot even though she is only a secondary character. I don't like her at all and was very disappointed she dominated this story so much. This book is just a bridge to the next not a book that is a stand alone like a book really should be even when in a series. That is what epilogue is for. I skipped some parts near the end because I was so tired of reading the main characters repeat the same dialog over and over. Very boring read with no real suspense of any kind.

Wow...I have read all of Prime series (great series) and I do have to say this book was pretty good but I am not one that enjoys jumping around from story to story and that is what I felt in Primal Desires.
One minute you would be reading about one set of characters then three pages over it snatched you and threw you into another set! To be honest the book was good but the jumping around made me mad! Sorry

Wow! What a riveting ride! I devoured(pun is entirely intentional)this book in two and half days. This is story of Jason and Sofia and Sidonie Wolf (the latter has issues). It is a tale of two families, werewolf and vampire and things in between. Susan does it once again with panache, sensuality, sex, and romance. Once again, damn fine writing.
I thoroughly enjoyed the way the plot unfolds with Jason and Sofia. Her family has a secret and it's a very intriguing one. Though Jason is introduced in a previous book, in this one we really see what makes him tick. I hope that we get to see something of the Families in the future. There are surprises in this book! Little Toni is more than she seems at first. I really liked the characterizations in this one. The relationship between the Wolf Clan and the local werefolk is an interesting one. This is the latest in what I hope will be much continued series.

Book Six of the Primes Series,
This review is from: Primal Desires (Primes Series, Book 6) (Mass Market Paperback)
A few weeks ago, I read PRIMAL HEAT. It was my first Susan Sizemore book and I totally fell in love with way the author emotionally connected me to her characters. As soon as I was done, I found a copy of PRIMAL DESIRES, the sixth book in this series and started reading it the day of arrival. For the bad news, it wasn't as good as the previous book. Let me explain why. Something new - it might not be so new and I am just finding out about it - is writers are adding more that one romance to a book. My guess it this sets the scene for the sequel. I find it irritatingly distracting. Let take this book for example. The book is the romance between Jason Cage and Sofia Hunyara. The author also had a romance going on with Cathy and Mike, and though not as deep, between Sid and Joe. What happened to sticking with the two main characters? Another problem was using Eden, Sid, and David and their dialogue to explain the story's background. Not only did it make the story unbelievable, but it confused the living daylights out of me. So is this going to prevent me from reading more? Heck no! In fact, I am going to do something I rarely do and that's go back to the beginning of the series with I BURN FOR YOU. There is also another series I'll be picking up of hers called Laws of the Blood.

Primal Desires,
This review is from: Primal Desires (Primes Series, Book 6) (Mass Market Paperback)
Jason Cage performs as the beast master in Las Vegas. He's wildly popular and very talented. What most people don't know, though, is that Jason is Prime of his vampire family. During World War II he used his telepathic abilities to help the Hunyara family tame a pack of feral wolves. Now, in the present time, the Hunyaras are back, asking for his help in a similar situation
Sofia Hunyara is afraid of dogs. She knows nothing about her abilities as a wolf tamer until she meets Jason. Sofia's cousin, Cathy, is missing, and the Hunyaras have asked Jason for help in finding her. When Jason and Sofia meet, the attraction is instant. Jason knows that Sofia is destined to be his bond mate, but she's not so sure. The two enlist the help of werewolves and vampires alike to find Cathy and thwart the plans of the werewolves that hold her captive. Primal Desires is my first Susan Sizemore novel, and it won't be my last. The novel is lush and very rich in detail, with characters that walk alongside you as you read. I loved Sofia and Jason. The interaction between the two of them pulls at your heartstrings. The world of vampires and werewolves that Ms. Sizemore has created is fascinating. I can't wait to find the other books in the series so I can see how things built up to Primal Desires. I will be eagerly awaiting the next book in the Primes series to see how things progress. I have enjoyed this series all along, I like this book, but didn't find this book as engaging as the previous.
One big disappointment for me was The Nazi Werewolf Scheme. This seems to be a total rip off of Lori Handelands series. Sure writers spin off each other's ideas, but this seemed really blatant and I am surprised Sizemore didn't change it up more so it wasn't so obviously similar to Handelands spin on werewolves. Well to me at least. Makes me wonder if Sizemore is going to start a series on werewolves (which I would love). Aside form that, a good continuation of the series, but something was missing. Can't put my finger on it, but I felt less engaged this time. Maybe too many side stories, or back stories? Still worth the read, and it will be interesting to see where Sizemore is going from here.

I agree with "melindeeloo" that the many plots were disjointed and confusing and the two main stories should have been separated. I was able to follow the story line only because I've read other books in the series. As a stand alone book I wouldn't recommend it but it's great as a source of information about the whole series.

great! I believe that this stroy fit in really good with the series. I would however, suggest that you read the books before this one, to better understand the prime world. I was happy that Cathy got her happy ending. And I belive that the main paring interacted well together.
It was a very interesting book that I would highly recomend! The series is just as good and just as highly recomened by me. This series and book makes you fall in love with the charecters surronding you. Once agian Susan Sizmore has outdone herself. I hope that you enjoy this book just as much as I did. |
