Preparation for the NEXT title is in order...this book is a bridge.,

This review is from: Primal Heat (Primes Series, Book 5) (Mass Market Paperback)
Of all the writers dealing with the vamp universe, Sizemore's world is probably my favorite. However, this is definitely a weaker novel in the series and would NOT be a good choice as a first introduction to her world. While intense sensuality is always a part of this series, this book starts out a little too fast and a little too casual--the leads seem to have no further connection than an itch needing to be scratched. Add to that character weakness, the complicated world of this vamp culture is not explained. That's a real shame because the author has created a great political and social system. The good news is much of this book appears to be a set-up for the next novel in the series and THAT book is the one to anticipate. If you find yourself frustrated reading this novel as a stand alone--just go back to her first two books or wait for the next one.

While for me I Thirst For You with Marc Cage & Joe Elliot has been the highlight book in this series, this tale of Cage's cousin and Joe's sister hooking up at the first couples wedding was still pretty good. It has a beter story line than a few of the other books in the series and it was more suspenseful. The bad guy was not glaringly obviouse for a change and the blending of several of the storylines and characters from this series was good. I don't know that this book could be considered a stand alone though as a first time reader of the series would probably be pretty confused.
The plot shapes out like this: Phillipa, Joe's older cop sister, and Matt Bridger, Cage's brit cousin who is the enforcement for the Family of vampires, hook up at Joe & Marcus's wedding. Matt knows that Philipa is his lifemate but he is afraid she will be targeted by his enemies and so runs away super quick.Flash forward 3 years. The happy Cage couple has just had their first child and it's time for the christening. Both Matt & Phillipa are back in town as godparents. But a psycho vamp has enlisted a few other supernatural friends and they are pulling heists in the same city. As a distraction to Matt the ringleader brainwashes a few Purist vampirehunters to target the baby and then Phillipa. Matt's werewolf buddy Mike, whom we met in Laurent's story is also in town after the baddy but stuck in doggy form. He may find salvation in an odd place though- a vampire magician who will be the subject of Ms. Sizemore's next book in the series.

exhilarating paranormal romantic police procedural,

At the wedding of Phillipa Elliot's sister Josephine to Marcus Cage, she meets Prime vampire Matt Bridger; the pair almost immediately retires to a hotel room for a night of great sex. When Phillipa awakens Matt is gone. They next meet three years later as both are the godparents of her newly born niece. Once again they give in to passion, but this time Phillipa departs first.
Matt knows he wants to be with Phillipa, but he has made too many enemies so he fears for her life if he acted on his desires. As they avoid one another, the Purists, a splinter group of Hunters, try to kill Jo and the baby. The psychic link between Phillipa and Matt leads to him coming to rescue them. A Purist renegade controlled by a vampire tries to kill Phillipa, but Matt scares him off. At the same time of the house invasion, rogue vampires and a werewolf ally loot Vegas stores and homes leaving vampiric police officer Matt to stop them without exposing his bond mate. The fun in this exhilarating paranormal romantic police procedural rests with the hero's feeble efforts to stay away from Phillipa in order to prevent the bonding of their already primal heated souls from happening out of a sense of responsibility to keep her from harm. The honorable Matt adheres to the rules governing vampire behavior especially with their treatment of other sentient species. With her latest vampire romantic suspense, Susan Sizemore once more displays that one size does not fit all with this fresh exciting thriller. Harriet Klausner

From J. Kaye's Book Blog,
This review is from: Primal Heat (Primes Series, Book 5) (Mass Market Paperback)
I ran across this book online or reading a review on a blog and the premises intrigued me. There was no warm up period. The book jumped into to action and attraction immediately. This is always a plus in my opinion.
What I wasn't aware of is this book is part of a series. PRIMAL HEAT is the fifth. Here is the series in order: I BURN FOR YOU I THIRST FOR YOU I HUNGER FOR YOU MASTER OF DARKNESS PRIMAL HEAT PRIMAL DESIRES It's not necessary to read these in order. PRIMAL HEAT stood on its own nicely without leaving feeling I missed something. Great book when you are looking for something light and fun, yet hot and spicy.

Little character development, little relationship development, and barely put steam on the mirror,

Where's the 2 and 1/2 start option when you need it?
Guess I should have done more research to figure out which was the first book in this series. Although from the page before the book starts, it lead me to believe this was the first book, Master of Darkness was the 2nd, I Burn from You the 3rd... but clearly that is incorrect. While it wasn't exactly difficult to figure out the overall workings of the universe we are in here, there were a few things that weren't explained at all (and I hope they are in the first book) - like what exactly the deal is with Family vs. Clan vs. Tribe. 'Cuz I still don't know. And how exactly does one become a "Prime"? I had a number of issues with this book. First, the love scenes weren't so much steamy as mushy. And they were overly mushy. I'm all for the romance, and I know in this genre it tends to develop fast without much basis, but this took that to a whole new level. And, since the steaminess was just "ah" (another reminder I need to come up with a good steaminess scale to use!) I didn't even feel like it was balanced out with scenes good enough to make me blush. Second problem with this book was the bad guys. You could eliminate the reading of those chapters/sections and you wouldn't miss them. And you wouldn't be confused. So, from a plot development perspective - they were really not very integral or good. Octavia - seemed to have so much potential, but who knows what the heck happened to her. And she wasn't, as a character, really developed at all. The writing - well, I think a 6th grader could do better. There were dialogue scenes where I had to trace backwards after reading to figure out who said what. The jumping from character perspective (Mike, the wolf's and then the various vamp's) was just that - jumpy. Plus, it wasn't really about switching perspectives so much as simply switching scenes and I often felt like those witches were at awkward times, didn't move the plot forward, or were simply a waste of ink. And for someone who tried to keep the identity of the evil vamp a secret, relatively early on there is a slip (I assume it was a slip anyway) that totally gives the gender away. After that - I totally didn't get the point in not using the correct gender articles to identify "her" (versus "it"). When you add in the fact that there wasn't enough info to set Jason up as the bad guy red herring, it was no surprise at all as to the identity of the bad vamp. And, as stated earlier, we didn't get enough development of Octavia to really care that she was the bad guy. Finally, the heroine in this book... yuck. I expected to find out she was dying of some incurable cancer or something - not to merely hear she is diabetic. I know a number of diabetic who live perfectly normal lives - but this woman? No, not her. Instead she is a whiny little girl... boo whoo she needs to test her blood sugar. And she's supposed to be some tough cop? Please... Reading about her made me sad for women of the world - I certainly wouldn't want to be identified in the same breath as this woman. Even the little bit of Jo - the sister - seems a better heroine and someone tougher. If the author did any research or knows anyone who lives with diabetes and this is what she based that portion of the story line off of I wonder about the quality of her research skills or the moral fiber of the person(s) she based this off of... anyway... I probably wouldn't bother with the other in the Primes series - except I got them free a year ago, so I have 4 more. Might as well read them before sharing them. But unless the rest of these do a major turn around I won't exactly be purchasing any of Ms. Sizemore's titles for myself.

"Primal Heat" is a fun romance novel in the tradition of Feehan's vampire novels. Lady meets older vampire & falls overwhelming in lust; love & devotion follow. The setting is modern day, surrounded by family and devoted couples from previous romance novels.
This book is a sequel, and though the couple is new, the writing lacks the fresh originality & passion from Sizemore's previous books.

This is my 1st book by Susan Sizemore. I picked up book 5 & 6 at a book exchange. I did not realize this was book 5 until I was searching online for some of her other books. Which I guess is a good thing because this means the book stands alone in the series. However, I did feel like I had missed the story of Jo and Marc but it did not take away from me being able to follow the story line.
I thought the book was pretty good. Each Vampire Author writes with slightly different details/facts about vampires. I like that her vampires can be in the daylight due to a drug and I also like that her vampires can reproduce (interesting). It was different to read that her vampires can not make other vampires - you have to be born a vampire. Overall I thought it was a good story about love, hate & diversity. I believe you will like the main characters, Matt & Phillipa.
