Another in the Prime Series,
This review is from: Primal Needs (Mass Market Paperback)
When you mix a female vampire with a male werewolf your just asking for trouble. An touble is just what Sidonie Wolf and Joe Bleythin get when they are paired up to on a dangerous mission to save both vampires and werewolf's. This is a great series. Very involved and playing one book off the others. Reading is order is suggested.

I liked the Vampire-Werewolf romance. Different from Sizemore's usual human-vampire theme. In this book you also got a second romance between our female lead's father and a human woman he met in France during WWII. At first I was a bit confused by the change between the now and then stories, however, after a few time changes I got comfortable with the format and finished the book with ease. The end was very satisfying and set up a likely lead into the next book. Something to look forward to in hopefully the near future.

Primal Needs,

Primal Needs is the seventh book in a vampire series by Susan Sizemore and tells the story of Sid, a female vampire, and her werewolf love interest Joe, as well as the dangers they face together.
I did not find this an enjoyable read, which may in part be due to the fact that I did not read the previous books in the series. I found the two page chapters broke up the story into disconnected pieces and the jumping between many time periods distracting...and really, are sixty one chapters in 300 pages really necessary? Some of the concepts in the book were interesting (such as vampires producing a "dawn" drug so that they could go out in daylight), but the writing skipped around too much and lacked details and just didn't hold my interest. None of the characters were sufficiently fleshed out so that the reader cares what happens to them, they don't really have personalities. I won't be reading the rest of the series and can't really recommend this novel as a satisfying read.

A Frankenstein tale,

Or at least pieced together like Frankenstein...
I've not read previous books by Sizemore and I'm not even sure if this is a series or not. Reading it, it felt like one. I wondered if Sizemore was repeating instances from previous novels or just giving flashbacks. It was hard to decide which. I do know that the story started off with a vampire, Sid, and a werewolf, Joe. Sid and Joe apparently had a relationship in the past when Sid screwed it up. Sizemore flips back and forth between the past and present day to explain this. Then...halfway through the book she jumps to another story between the vampire Tony and the human woman Rose. Tony had to give up Rose because his mommie said so. Sizemore again flips back and forth between the past and the present day. All this flipping and switching characters was very confusing. Sizemore does NOT have a talent in this area to smoothly transition between people, places, and time. It would have been a better story if she would have stuck with one set of characters and time.

Primal Needs shows how two people must fight for what they want in ways that they never thought that they would have too. Not only do they have to fight to be together becaus they are two different species in the supernatural world, but she also has to fight to get her freedom from a world that doesn't want to do anything, but keep her locked away from the rest of the world. This book gets you into it right away. You fall into the book with the pictures running through your head as you read the story. In the end the two get to be together which makes it a good love story.

I can understand how those who are new to the series might not enjoy having two story lines in the book, but it works for me because Tony is Sid's father and I wanted to see his HEA but it couldn't support a whole story itself and also we already learned about Sid and Joe separately in earlier books so this book only had to cover them together leaving room for Tony/Rose. His forbidden love mirrored Sid's which gave a nice parallel. The switch to Tony and Rose's story did come right when Sid and Joe's was about to get good... it worked storyline wise but I can see how it might have been a tad frustrating for some. Could have possibly scattered sections in earlier, but the way it was done was preferable to me. I think this book was on par with her others for fans, and maybe a little below par for newcomers who should probably start with at least the two books preceding this one in the series before picking up Primal Needs.

thetwo story lines are mixed together but not in a good way. it would have been a better read if there had been two different books or there had been more story to each one. this was not a good blend. there were many unanswered questions that should have been answered. especially with rose and tonys story. even the epilogue just made you want to say what is this? i was very disappointed as i have loved all her books in this series in the past. i will not be automatically buying her books in the future. this whole book felt like just an outline that she had submitted to a publisher. not the final copy that should be published. as another had said very fragmented. if you want to read books that have two story lines with history interwoven then read one of suzanne brockmans books. that is how it is done.

engaging urban romantic suspense fantasy,
This review is from: Primal Needs (Mass Market Paperback)
Vampire Sidonie Wolf and werewolf Joe Bleythin fall in love. Both know their respective species outlaws a relationship between them; the penalty is death. Fearing for her Joe, Sid sacrifices her heart by modifying his memories of her and their love. Soon afterward, Joe shuts down their private investigative partnership and breaks up with her. Joe joins vampire Tobias Strahan's Dark Angels, a group dedicated to protecting paranormal species.
Meanwhile Sid's father, Antony has cherished from the shadows for six decades the human Rose; he loves her but is forbidden to do anything about his feelings by his species for the last 60 years. When someone kidnaps his Rose, Tony pleads with his daughter to save her life. She is teamed up with Dark Angel Joe to find and rescue Rose. Still angry with her for what she did to him, Joe also realizes she could not erase his love for her or conceal her love for him. The latest Primal (see HEAT and DESIRES) urban romantic suspense fantasy is a strong tale of star crossed lovers. Sid thought she was doing what was best for Joe while he felt she betrayed their trust. Their acrimonious beginning makes vampires and werewolves seem genuine in Susan Sizemore's Primal realm. Fans will enjoy this refreshing second chance at love thriller; that is if they survive the enemy and their two species. Harriet Klausner |
