4.0 out of 5 stars A good book for Primal Rage fans!
Primal Rage, for those who don't know, was a popular videogame that brought a lot of gamers's attention, thanks in part to the storyline, gameplay system, and much more. Sure, it was a fighting game that cloned several other games, like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter II, but it's a great game in it's own merits. Thanks to John Vornholt, a book has been released long ago...

Thanks to John Vornholt, a book has been released long ago and it stills entertains Primal Rage fans in the years to come.

The story is simple and uncomplicated. While the dino-gods are fighting for world domination, Necrosan, a new god, enters their world and banishes them using a spell called the "Bonds Of Forbidding." However, their shamans are left to fight their new adversary and haven't given up yet. Meanwhile, one of the dino-gods has a plan - using their powers, they can allow their shamans to transform into them for one hour. However, as the shamans gain this new power, some are power-hungry with this new-found gift, while others are sticking to the real goal: freeing the gods and defeating Necrosan once and for all.

This is a great book, not because of it's story, but a lot of action is implemented. Those who tend to like action will love what Primal Rage: The Avatars has to offer. It's sad to note that this book also dwells on the storyline for Primal Rage 2, which was, unfortunately, never released, and would give gamers an idea of what the game would played and sound liked. Finally, the book includes another devastating flaw - it does not include more backgrounds of all the dino-gods, save for Blizzard.

Other than that, it's highly recommanded that players give Primal Rage - The Avatars a second chance to read. It's a great, although short, book and it's worth anyone's time and patience!

4.0 out of 5 stars Primal Rage - Good, clean, violent, lusty, entertaining fun!, April 29, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Primal Rage: The Avatars (Paperback)
I've recently had a resurgence in interest with this short-lived but unique franchise of the late 90's, based off of a wild arcade game featuring a gaggle of monstrous gods who fight bloody battles to conquer Earth, or "Urth."
I received this book on Friday, and finished it Saturday afternoon. And I'll be damned if this wasn't a pleasantly surprising read!
Reading other reviews, I gathered that there was very little, if anything to the story, and it would be extremely short and shallow, but I was thankfully proven wrong. PR: The Avatars isn't a masterful piece of fiction, or an exercise in psychological drama, but it's just good ol' fashioned entertainment. I would akin the story to a well-written Saturday-morning cartoon, with fun characters, amusing dialogue, great action, an epic feel, and a decidedly mature twist to it ;)
The characters are numerous, but as a result, only a few get any real development, but almost all of them are at least touched upon and given personalities, beast god and human avatar alike (especially the main characters of Blizzard and his samurai, Kaze).
The editing of the book is somewhat flawed, however, there being numerous typos, and characters sometimes even getting mixed up in fights and other sequences, but the latter flaw is few and far between, and really shouldn't detract from enjoying the book.
The story uses classic themes of love, honor, bravery, deception, lust, coming-of-age, and even animalistic values of power and battle.
Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone who's not only a die-hard Primal Rage fan, but as well to anyone looking for a fun read. Be warned, though, this book's got some rather risky themes and characters, with plenty of gore and a healthy dose of erotic tension (though that's what makes it all the more fun).

I recently read Primal Rage: The Avatars, and I read it in only 2 days because it was so cool! I couldnt stop reading! The storyline was great, and the Avatar deal was a pretty cool idea. I wish PR2 came out, but not everything we want happens. I wish they had a little more info on the Gods (especially Sauron!), but it was a great book anyway. Sauron is the best Primal Rage God!

If you are a Primal Rage fan, then you'll probably love this book, almost all of them have. However most Primal Rage fans are very young as in twelve and below.

Vornholt tries to incorporate all the gods and give them each a unique personality but ends up shining on only a few namely Blizzard and a little bit of Vertigo (my personal favorite, and I must say he did her no justice.)

The game is about the gods. The book is about seven special worshippers that have been linked to their gods.

Vornholt has a tendency to confuse his characters during the battle scenes and makes a nice amount of typos as well. The plot is boring and typical. You won't find anything profound in this read.

It's pulp fiction in it's purest form.

5.0 out of 5 stars John Vornholt RULES!!!, November 3, 2002
This review is from: Primal Rage: The Avatars (Paperback)
I read this book when I was 10 and it has remained my favorite book to this day. John Vornholt is the best author in my mind, and I am so happy to see everyone else here agrees with me that this books is fantastic. Next time I read this book it will be my 7th time, and I'm sure I'll love it as I always have.

One more thing, for the ongoing favorite pick of God, I've gotta go with Vertigo.

An excellent, suspenseful book that really displays the world of Primal Rage. They should have gone into more detail with the others, but I like it anyway! A sequel MUST be written! Long live Primal Rage!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read!, March 9, 2000
This review is from: Primal Rage: The Avatars (Paperback)
A fantastic book, one of my all-time favorites. Although I wish we could have known more about the other characters (especially Talon!), it was still great. Anyone who likes the game will love the book, and perhaps even people who haven't played the game will enjoy it.

Also, if you didn't know, this was the original plot for Primal Rage 2. I know they were making it, my cousin played a demo a couple years back. But whatever happened to Primal Rage 2? I wish I knew....

5.0 out of 5 stars Best in its class, April 19, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Primal Rage: The Avatars (Paperback)
I think it is one of the best books I have ever read. My only objection is that it didn't go into too much detail about all the caracters and what they are like as much as they did Blizzard. But other then that I can find no flaws in the book, it is very clever and well written and easy to visualize. I only wish all the dinos could of been on the cover. I am hoping and looking for a sequel, though they do not even have this one in my library, I will surely recommend it to them. I think anyone who likes the video game will love the book.
