Book Description

June 1, 2005 1593631227 978-1593631222
It's never too early to start building thinking skills—skills that will spill over into other areas of the curriculum and into real life. Primarily Logic consists of a series of units designed to introduce logical thinking to young thinkers. It is an excellent, easy-to-use starting point for teaching well-established forms of logical thinking. Each skills is introduced with examples, and then worksheets give students an opportunity to practice the skill. Group lessons and worksheets provide practice in: finding relationships, analogies, thinking logically using "all" and "no" statements, syllogisms, and deductive reasoning using logic puzzles.

Logical thinking is both enjoyable and challenging for students as they build a sound foundation for further instruction in critical thinking. Suggestions for related activities are included in the Instructions for Teachers section.

For easier logic activities for younger students try Lollipop Logic.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Primarily Logic, written for grades 2–4, has a great mix of activities including topics such as analogies, relationships, deductive reasoning, problem solving, and organizing information. Cute illustrations, lots of variety, and engaging activities introduce students to some pretty sophisticated logic in a way they will enjoy.

Amazon.com Review

Lollipop Logic for grades K–2 and Primarily Logic for grades 2–4 are critical thinking resources. They provide worksheets that introduce and reinforce skills such as analogies, syllogisms, relationships, sequencing, deduction, inference, and others. The pages are clean and attractive to make these high-level thinking skills seem like fun. You"ll be pleased with the connections your child makes and the excitement that these books produce.

5.0 out of 5 stars Logical Thinking, November 24, 2007

"Primarily Logic" is a good workbook for teachers to use with students who struggle beyond literal comprehension. It is sequential in difficulty and covers classification, relationships and analogies. It has helped 4th and 5th grade students with reading difficulties.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but not great...., February 25, 2011
By

This review is from: Primarily Logic (Paperback)
A book with a fairly decent selection of various activities, though a few of the questions and answers are not straight forward enough for children (regardless of their IQ) and most adults would disagree with a few of the answers here and there. However, it's a good selection and a place to start for these types of activities. I'd buy it again.

I'm using this with my third-grader. She enjoys the book. The work seems right at her level. As another reviewer said, we do occasionally run into problems that are poorly worded or for which the answer seems odd. It happens often enough to be memorable but not often enough to take more than one star from the review. Maybe once every 20 lessons or so? So that is an annoyance, but it isn't more than that.

We aren't to the point of discussing any logic theory at all, but the exercises here help form the foundations for more traditional logic when she is older.

The book has 42 lessons, with each lesson being one page long, and set up like a worksheet. There is no lengthy didactic component (which I think is a good thing for this age group).
