From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8–McDonald presents introductory information on the Civil War and suggests Web sites for additional, in-depth research. The book includes a one-page explanation of what primary sources are, a Civil War time line, and eight chapters that discuss various aspects of the conflict, including quotes from Union and Confederate soldiers and civilians, songs, and press coverage. This information is sketchy and serves only to entice readers to do advanced research at the recommended sites. The text is illustrated with captioned maps, archival photographs, and Web pages. A few sites are marked Editor's Choice, though there is no explanation as to who selected these resources. Detailed chapter notes and an up-to-date list of suggested readings complete the book. It is implied that the Internet report links equal great information and reports sure to impress teachers. Teachers and librarians should evaluate the usability of the book based upon their own teaching styles and philosophies.–Patricia Ann Owens, Wabash Valley College, Mt. Carmel, IL
