PreS--This unusual board book features three cats, one red, one blue, and one yellow, who meet, shake hands, exchange a few words, and then go their separate ways. Each time they touch, their colors blend to make the appropriate complimentary color. When Red and Blue shake, for example, their paws turn purple. Simple text ("Hello Red. Hello Blue") on the left-hand pages complement the full-page paintings on the right. In spite of the board-book format and the brief text (only about 35 words altogether), this title is not appropriate for toddlers because of the abstract quality of the art and the multicolored backgrounds. Young children may be puzzled because the text offers no explanation for why the cats' fur changes color. According to the publisher, there is no title or other printing on the cover so that the book may be displayed as a "fine art painting." This book will appeal to cat-loving adults who enjoy unusual art. Parents who want to teach their children about primary colors may prefer a more traditional treatment such as Ellen Stoll Walsh's Mouse Paint (Harcourt, 1989).

A Respite for the Grown-Ups!,
By Cat (Northborough, MA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Primary Cats (Loose Leaf)
Such an unusual board book: a wonderful, jazzy, bluesy rhyme that's fun for a mummy or daddy to read out loud (other parents will recognize how great a virtue this is). The words trip off the tongue like a toddler version of the first paragraphs of Lolita. And the pictures have the same simple/complex dichotomy, formed as the painted colors of each Primary Cat (named Red, Blue, and Yellow) blend into secondary colors where the cats come into contact. Even the ending has a twist. Not to be missed by any parent who resists the trudge through yet another board (bored?) book with babies in costumes and insipid text.Oh yes, the babies love it too. Get it!

The perfect book for a child just learning about colors! Our 18-month old daughter just loves cats and colors, and we love the chance to give her big kisses on the "mmmmm" page! A really fun book for kids and parents.

Fun book, pictures illustrate the mixing of primary colors,

This review is from: Primary Cats (Loose Leaf)
Fun book with catchy phrases. Three cats,(the primary colors, red, yellow and blue,) greet each other and in their interactions the secondary colors are made. Children love the easy text and enjoy watching the colors mix in the pictures. Great way to introduce the concept of primary and secondary colors.
