Book Description

11 and up6 and upPrimary Sources of the Thirteen Colonies and the Lost Colony
THIRTEEN COLONIES & THE LOST COLONY™ Take a step back and discover the thirteen colonies of Colonial America. From European exploration through the American Revolution, witness the unique history and character of each colony. Trace the role of each colony in the American Revolution and that colony's impact on the formation of our Constitution. New York - This is a vibrant and fascinating look at the history of the colony of New York. Using primary source documents, we are taken from the discovery of the island of Manhattan and the founding of a tiny Dutch trading village, to New York’s emergence as one of the world’s most influential cities. "Good organization, well-written text which reads like a story, numerous quotes and historic incidents, attractive format and well-designed pages, drawings, maps...all make this title a recommended source for studies in the colonial period of American history." - ASSOCIATION OF REG. XI SCHOOL LIBRARIANS, TEXAS

Editorial Reviews

From AudioFile

New York's colonial history is clearly narrated for young students. The production's chronological structure helps overcome its lack of maps and illustrations. While the preponderance of dates and places makes for dense listening, narrator Jay Snyder maintains a slow, explanatory pace. He uses a strong voice and a consistent tone, and his voice is pleasant to hear, if dry. When primary sources are presented, he uses alternate voices. Overall, his authoritative narration matches the academic intent of this work. It's difficult to enliven a laundry list of political history. But the production certainly succeeds in presenting a brief, clear account of New York's early years.
