This book is an introduction to the field and its applications to primate conservation. Like no other book on the market, this comprehensive book integrates the basics of evolutionary and ecological approaches to the study of primate behavior with up-to-date coverage of how different primates actually behave.
Examples are drawn from the classic primate field studies and more recent studies on previously neglected species illustrating the vast behavioral variation that we now know exists and the gaps in our knowledge that future studies will fill. Primate Behavioral Ecology fills a tremendous need for a book that integrates contemporary behavioral ecology, evolutionary theory, and conservation concerns as they pertain to primates.
For readers interested in the study of primate behavior and conservation issues.
Karen B. Strier (Ph.D., Harvard University, 1986) has been Hilldale Professor of Anthropology and Affiliate Professor of Zoology At University of Wisconsin-Madison since 1989. Her main research interests are to understand the behavioral ecology of primates from a comparative perspective, and to contribute to conservation efforts on their behalf. She has been studying the Northern Muriqui in Brazil's Atlantic forest since 1982. She is also the author of Faces in the Forest: the Endangered Muriqui Monkeys of Brazil.

Good Survey Text,

This review is from: Primate Behavioral Ecology (Paperback)
A good survey text of primate social ecology. Strier's work among new world primates makes this book better than most which are too heavily biased towards macaque and chimp studies.

Thought provoking to say the least.,

This review is from: Primate Behavioral Ecology (3rd Edition) (Paperback)
Book is great, thought provoking, and is a must-read for how the variables of resources, environment, and gender differences impact behavior. I am taking the Author's course, however, at UW-Madison, so my inherent bias must be stated.
