Biography

Judging from their name, Suicidal Tendencies were never afraid of a little controversy. Formed in Venice, CA, during the early '80s, the group's leader from the beginning was outspoken vocalist Mike Muir. The outfit specialized in vicious hardcore early on -- building a huge following among skateboarders, lending a major hand in the creation of skatepunk -- before turning their focus eventually to… Read more in Amazon's Suicidal Tendencies Store

3.0 out of 5 stars A good overview of ST's career..., May 2, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Prime Cuts - Best of (Audio CD)
First off, my favorite ST album is their first. That was far more "punk" than anything they released after it; with Join The Army they basically became a metal band. That isn't to say they didn't put out some good material afterward, though. I bought this one to get tracks like "You Can't Bring Me Down" and "Gotta Kill Captain Stupid." Both of 'em rock, even if the lyrics aren't exactly Bob Dylan.

But I was VERY disappointed that the versions of "Institutionalized" and "I Saw Your Mommy" are from Still Cyco rather than the first album. These songs do NOT benefit from the tighter musicianship of the post-debut band.

If you're looking for a quick intro to Suicidal Tendencies, buy this CD. Then find a copy of their debut, and you have all the ST you will ever need!

4.0 out of 5 stars Suicidal for life, September 15, 2002
This review is from: Prime Cuts - Best of (Audio CD)
This 1997 greatest hits album is a fairly good overview of the career of punk/thrash pioneers Suicidal Tendencies. Here we get classics like "Institutionalized", "You Can't Bring Me Down", "How Will I Laugh Tomorrow?", and "Lovely", along with some other great songs like "I Saw Your Mommy" and "Nobody Hears". We also get some re-recorded songs on here as well that longtime ST fans will either like or dislike (such as "I Saw Your Mommy"), but all in all, this is a good start if you want to get into Suicidal Tendencies, but if you are really looking into getting into the band, start with they're brilliant self titled debut album. Gotta love the album cover here though.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great cross-section, December 5, 2006
By
This review is from: Prime Cuts - Best of (Audio CD)
"Prime Cuts" is a best-of album so, you either like ST or you don't. Being a 20-year ST fan, I love having a cross-section of their material. (Personally, I was surprised the "Controlled by Hatred" didn't make the cut (no pun intended). If you're not a ST fan, then this is a great introduction. They never really made it big but they had some great material. Any interest in skater-thrash or metal? If so, ST is for you.
