The only negative might be the instructions could be better.
Rick Tanner
The tool to remove the cylinder from the door knob was to large to fit and had to be filed down to just barely work.

The Defiant locks imply they can be rekeyed to any KW1 compatible key but not with this kit.

I rekeyed 4 locks in our new-to-us home, 2 of which are deadbolts. It took 2-3 hours, but the last one took only a few minutes after the learning curve. Although this kit is for 5 pin locks, it worked for my 3 locks which are 6 pin. I just left the hole most distant away from the handle empty. If you do this, you also have to take out the upper pin and spring in the 6 hole. The instructions were merely adequate but not really complete in that it doesn't tell you what mistakes to avoid. The pictures and terms used were not always clear. But they were complete enough. There are actually no deadbolt instructions but the approach is the same. I lacked a very tiny allen wrench to get the handle off the deadbolt, but got by using a tiny phillips screwdriver. Don't overbend the retaining clip when you remove it prior to expelling the cylinder. I had to push very firmly to get the cylinder out of its housing.

Sure you could call a locksmith or bring your locks to one, and I may do that next time. But I would have missed out on so much: seeing the cool innards of a lock, trying to share that with my kids who quickly lost interest, scaring my wife that we would sleep the night in an unsecured house (would that be worse than the night without water when i had issues installing shut off valves under the sink?), the satisfaction of doing it myself, saving a few bucks, and rewarding myself with a favored libation. BTW, you can also get this at HD for about thirteen or lowes for about ten bucks. This product is made in the USA.

I re-keyed three locks. Two regular and one deadbolt. The first one took me a half hour, the next two about 10 minutes apiece.

The most time consuming part for me was separating the pin colors. I expected a greater difference in size between the 5 types of pins. But the size difference was not easily discernible. And for me, being color-challenged, the color difference between a couple of sets of pins were not easily discernible. It would be helpful to have a color-gifted person to help with pin sorting.

I also took this opportunity to spray the innards with WD-40 since these were 5-year old locks I was working with. The new keys will thank you.

The metal tool was to wide and I had to have someone grind it down on both sides to make it more narrow to fit in the tube to pop the housing out. That was a big disappointment.I found better instructions on You Tube also. The pins are almost the same size. There should be at least one or two deep cuts in the key.

I bought this set once to re-key a property I own and then another set to re-key the same property at a later time. I started the process of re-keying and suddenly realized the color coding is exactly the same as was already installed. Apparently, 2 different kits I ordered came with the exact same color code, which means that the old keys can open the locks also after the re-keying - obviously that defies the whole concept of re-keying a lock!!!

Besides, I had to learn the hard way how to work with it. The metal bar in the kit is useless and so are the rest of the tools. You'd have to use a long screwdriver and a small hammer to push the lock out of the knob (in case of a deadbolt this is much easier).

Bottom line - once you learn how to work with it, this kit does the job and you end up with a new key set for your locks. However, don't plan on buying another kit to re-key it since you just end up with the same key set apparently...

EDIT: I decided to buy another kit and try it out. This time I noticed that there is a number that identifies different sets. The one I re-keyed the locks previously was numbered 136 whereas the new kit was numbered 130. The numbers are also engraved on the keys. So my hope was that now with a different numbered re-key kit I will be able to properly re-key the house. I found out that the difference between the 130 and the 136 is so minor that even though these are different keys, both can open each other locks, making this whole re-keying procedure totally useless. You can see that in the video (sorry for the low quality - I'm no video expert).
I'm reducing the rating to 1 star since I lost any hope this is getting better and I'm done buying more kits to end up with the useless re-keyed locks.

I bought a house and the previous owner handed me a half dozen different keys duplicated twice - one set for him and one set for his better half.

Putting them in my pocket I walked into the house and my wife, faking an excellent Mae West witticism asked - "Is that a pistol in your pocket, or are you just glad to see me?"

Later that day I ordered the re-keying kit and a few days later re-keyed the six locks. It was easy to use with full, easy to read and understand instructions. In a couple of hours, counting breaks, I had the task done.

Now we have just three keys - one for her, one for me and one for the key box.

After finishing the job and giving her a copy, she replied - "I liked you better when you made me think you were happy to see me."

This is priced competitively compared to the price at the big box store, where I bought mine. If you have a house with eight locks to rekey, you may have to buy another kit as this kit will do six locks. The pins are color coded so that you will be guided to re-key your locks to the keys provided with the kit. Strangely, most of the pins in the kit I bought are about the same length. If you DO have eight locks to re-key, the second kit may not be compatible with the first kit, because I suspect that the pins are colored to help us put the pins in the right order and different kits will have a different length for the same color pin.

I only needed to re-key a new lock to my old key, because my old lock broke. This kit doesn't help me with that, because 24 of the pins are the same length and no combination of the included pins works with my old key.

The instructions are OK, dealing with both door knobs and deadbolts. They even tell you how to deal with the pins and springs flying out of the cylinder housing, should that happen.

You do learn how to re-key and you do save some serious $$ even if you have just 1 lock to re-key. I do recommend this kit, though even Amazon has better alternatives for more $ that are geared to other applications such as mine.
