Millions have followed Joan Collins's every move on television's hit night-time soap "Dynasty." Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This first novelist is a better actress. But Collins has at least followed one of the basic rules for the fiction ingenue: write about something you know. Her milieu is Hollywood in the 1980s, where five actresses are testing for the "greatest goddamn woman's role since Scarlett O'Hara." The coveted part is that of Miranda, the glamorous, voluptuous, bitchy ex-wife of a business tycoon in a TV series resembling Dynasty. Top contender is beautiful Chloe Carriere, a British songstress married (and faithful) to an aging rock star with a penchant for young girls. She harbors a carefully guarded secretan illegitimate love child whom she dotes on, but who knows her as Aunt Chloe. Generating only tepid suspense with this soap-opera staple, Collins is equally inept with a second element of attempted intrigue: a disturbed young man so obsessed by another actress vying for the prized part that he plots to kill the "sluts" who are competing for the role. While Collins's experiences enhance the various Hollywood settings with a good blend of glitz and gossip, her writing is pedestrian, her plotting obvious and her dialogue cliche-ridden and trite. First s erial to Cosmopolitan; Doubleday Book Club main selection; Literary Guild alternate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Glitzy & fun., November 10, 2002
This review is from: Prime Time (Hardcover)
Corruption, Lust, Sex, Betrayal . . . This book has it all.
The story of five acresses & their struggle for one star part. Joan Collins' novel is a glimpse at the lives of ambitious young women and their hunger for success.
Set against a background of great wealth, luxurious homes, yachts etc.
An enjoyable book. A non-stop page-turner.

5.0 out of 5 stars PURE ESCAPISM, January 3, 2005
This review is from: Prime Time (Hardcover)
Joan Collins can put novelist to her resume now with this page-turner of the rich and rotten. Her brochette of characters are a likable bunch, as they suffer and suffer during the making of a nightime soap opera. And bubbles sure do float in this glossy, effective novel. Collins's prose is sharp, witty and wicked, with a fast-moving plot and glamorous descriptions of clothing, sexual escapades, champagne and caviar parties--all the right ingredients for making PRIME TIME a one sitting read. Yes, glitter is her game, but can you really expect anything else from the queen of television's melodrama herself ?-----Martin Boucher

4.0 out of 5 stars "AM I CRAZY, OR DOES THIS BOOK HAVE DIFFERENT VERSIONS!", August 5, 2009
This review is from: Prime Time (Paperback)
I HAVE AT LEAST 3 COPIES OF THIS BOOK. THE FIRST TIME I BOUGHT IT, IT WAS A PAPERBACK COPY. THE SECOND TIME I PURCHASED IT, I BELIEVE IT WAS ON A CLEARANCE TABLE IN A BOOKSTORE. THEN RECENTLY I BOUGHT IT AGAIN, FOR $.50 AT THE LOCAL LIBRARY WHERE I LIVE. I READ THIS BOOK YEARS AGO. BUT I REMEMBER THE PAPERBACK BEING A BIT HARD TO READ. BUT THEN I HAD NO TROUBLE WITH THE SECOND COPY. I FOUND IT TO BE A VERY PLEASANT READ. BUT THEN FOR SOME REASON THE THIRD COPY I OWN IS EVEN BETTER. AM I READING DIFFERENT VERSIONS OR AM I JUST ENJOYING THE BOOK NOW? I REMEMBER WHEN THIS BOOK FIRST HIT THE SHELVES. DYNASTY WAS OVER AND I WAS LEFT WITH: WHAT AM I GOING TO REPLACE IT WITH! BY THE END OF THE "1990'S" JOAN HAD ONLY WRITTEN ABOUT 3 NOVELS. EVERYTHING ELSE WAS EITHER PERTAINING TO "BEAUTY" OR AN UPDATE ON HER FIRST AUTOBIOGRAPHY. EVENTHOUGH I WANTED MORE MATERIAL WRITTEN BY JOAN COLLINS, I WOUND UP READING "JACKIE'S" BOOKS BECAUSE I HAD READ EVERYTHING AVAILABLE BY JOAN. "PRIME TIME" IS EVEN BETTER NOW. I AM REDISCOVERYING IT ALL OVER AGAIN. THIS BOOK IS EVEN BETTER THAN I REMEMBER. I MAY JUST DIG UP THE REST OF HER NOVELS AND READ THOSE OVER TOO. BUY THIS BOOK IF YOU HAVEN'T. YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED.
