Petri nets provide a formal framework for system modeling and validation which has proven to be very reliable in practice. This book presents various net models appropriate for designing specific systems, where systems are understood very generally as "organizational systems" in which regulated flows of objects and information are significant. The models are interrelated in the sense that they have common interpretation patterns: together they can be understood as a method for specifying any given system or any section of such a system to any given degree of refinement. This book is excellent for those that are new to petri nets. Most documentation I've seen so far (in petri nets) focus on mathematically rigorous description of nets and algorithms and techniques for net analysis. This is excellent; however, there is nothing (except Mr. Reisig's book) that describes to a novice how to break down a problem, how to model it with nets. For a novice, mathematical rigour means nothing if there are no examples of how to model a system! Dr. Reisig presents simple, comprehensible systems and possible net models for them. He explains how and why a given model is used. He avoids esoteric mathematics, for at this level of learning, they just get in the way. Once a student goes through this book, he/she will be better equiped to tackle petri nets at a more formal level. Kudos to Dr. Reisig!
