1.0 out of 5 stars El Primer Instinto, December 7, 2004
This review is from: Primer Instinto (Audio CD)

Canciones Recomendadas: solo "La Llorona".

After numerous abruptly ended listens to this disc over the past six months I figured out why it wasn't a hit with me. I've heard it all before and if you have a Jagaures or Califanes disc in your collection you've heard it before too. The not so novel approach is a sort of "unplugged" version, complete with live audience singing along to your favorite songs on several tracks. The disc is ok but lacks the punch, the essence of rocnroll to really win over any new fans; this disc is for die hard fans mostly. Since I don't fall into that category I found the disc to be subdued, lacking in enthuiasm and generally riding the coat tails of their previous success. Could this be a contractual fullfillment fluff piece behind Saul's persona? Whatever the reason for the lackluster disc it does seem to get better after several listens. The packaging is made for both sides of the border with lyrcis in English and Spanish which is a nice touch considering they(he) has so many fans in the United States. there are plenty of accompanying guest musicians and peple who lent their talents to the arrangements, including the marvelous Jose Hernanadez of the Mariachi Sol de Mexico and the Sonora Santanera. The acoustic versions of songs like "Quisierra Ser Alcohol" are complete with a background chorus by the audience and you can almost see the lit matches in the darkness as the crowd sways. Some songs are a little more moving than others. Take "Arriesgate" for example, the band begins to deliver with some fire, plus there is an elevated consciousceness to their lyrics. On "La Vida No es Igual" which begins with an Indian chant that influences the complete sound of the song that carries throughout ending in a sort of huapango style. "Matame Porque Me Muero' is a sort of Yo-Yo-Ma goes Latino version that is different. The familiar and often recorded "La Llorona" is not near as good as most other versions; it is just too much of the same and sounds like every other Saul Hernandez song. Even the help on accordian by David Hidalgo cannot salvage the song and propel it beyond the ordinary. "Como Tu" has got the rhythm and sounds like it is really going to cook but barely sizzles with a enemic salsa beat. If it were hot sauce it would be mild. "Detras De Los Cerros" is more like the real deal and sounds true to the original version and is the quintessential Jaguares song. If you are new to Jaguares try the disc "El Equilibrio de Los Jaguares." Maybe the final track sums up the feeling of this disc. It is entitled "No Importa" (It Doesn't Matter).

so i read the reviews and i happen to love all the songs that everyone seems to hate on soo much. im not a huge fan so im guessing that those are probably hardcore fans from when jaguares used to be caifanes. my fave song on here is te lo pido por favor. Love it. so I'm very happy with my purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Creo que es la musi que Saul siempre quiso tocar?, August 9, 2007

I see tham having more fun exploring pre-Hispanic melodies and traditional instruments than they ever did playing Western-style rock.

It's no accident that several songs start with an indigenous dialect intro.

It's really not what I expected but it's not that bad. I love La Celula Que Explota and I was excited to listen to that one but when I heard it and relized it was with mariachi and not rock wich is what I expected I was kind of dissapointed. There's other good songs in there as well but not like other albums. I still think their a great band and absolutely love them but this is for sure not their best one.

5.0 out of 5 stars a more mellow approach...., January 9, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Primer Instinto (Audio CD)
This cd of Jaguares is pretty good. Its a cd that you can play and not get sick of. Its really good to listen to when your stressed. haha. anyway,it gives you a sense of a live version of them playing (except in a concert they aren't mellow, it's completly opposite) but its good. and plus you get "te lo pido porfavor" which is a new version of Juan Gabriels song. Bottom line, its a good cd for all those mellow/chilled out moments. To me it was money well spent. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Uno the los mejores disco del Rock en Español!!!!, October 28, 2003

For the english speaking people, buy this cd to get a good feel of Mexican Rock. Its really a nice slow cd that you can get into and feel the songs even though you don't understand the lyrics. This is my favorite cd and its in constant rotation on my cd player. This will go down in the history of Spanish Rock as a classic cd.

3.0 out of 5 stars Jaguares Rule, But This One..., September 19, 2003
This review is from: Primer Instinto (Audio CD)
I am a diehard fan of Caifanes/Jaguares, as they truly are the best of the major rock bands out of Mexico. This latest recording of acoustic and tropical interpretaions, however, just does not leave me with those mystical vibes I get from their other works. Not that it's bad, Primer Instinto does have it's moments, like "por un beso", "Viento" and "arriesgate". The thing is that most of these new versions are simply not as compelling as the originals.

Also, the English translations, found in the cover are awful. They are literal translations which do not capture the true meaning and feeling.

That having been said, I want to stress once again, that Jaguares are a great band, just chack out "cuando la sangre galopa" to find out what I mean. But, unless you are a true fan, I would avoid this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Jaguares, El Primer Instinto, June 26, 2003
By
This review is from: Primer Instinto (Audio CD)
