I'm not a therapist, and you don't have to be to benefit from this book. It's a true "Primer" in the sense that it has all the essentials in a condensed format. If you have to live or work with people who drive you crazy these are essential skills to learn and use. Great stuff. Let the healing begin!

This provides a decent introduction to the essentials of REBT and also has lots of great tips and techniques on how to fully understand the principles behind it and how to actually use REBT to bring about positive behavioural and emotional changes.

It is designed for therapists but I found it very useful to use on my own.
It details the basic ABC REBT model. This consists of

A - Adversity. The aspects of a situation that you feel an emotional disturbance over
B - Beliefs you have about this adversity.
C - Consequences. Emotional, behavioural and cognitive.

With REBT most disturbance are said to be caused be irrational beliefs.

1. Rigid beliefs.
2. Awfulizing beliefs.
3. Discomfort intolerance beliefs.
4. Depreciation beliefs.

You are taught and encouraged to replace them with rational beliefs. This book is particularly good at showing you techniques to use so that you can deepen your conviction in rational beliefs beyond just a shallow intellectual understanding. I found this to be particularly helpful as many self-help books tend to be of little practical use beyond a bit of short-term inspiration.
You are provided with step by step guidance and I like the way that it wasn't dogmatic and a questioning approach was recommended.

This is quite short and there is very little fluff in it. You do have to work quite hard at it but I have it found that the results makes this a worthwhile investment of your time.

This is an amazing little book that not only gives a very clear introduction to REBT, it outlines a typical therapy session using the method. I have used it in numerous courses that I have taught on CBT/REBT and students often tell me several years later that it was the one book they held close during their early days as a psychotherapy. The chart on the types of rational and irrational beliefs, appropriate and inappropriate emotions, and the relationship among them is very helpful as practitioners are learning those categories. I have at times showed that page to clients, who appreciate is comprehensiveness devoid of jargon and endless commentary.

I was a fellow of the Albert Ellis Institute and worked with Dr. Ellis for years, so had the advantage of listening to him discuss the theory he originated, but this book is by far the best intro to the theory I have seen.

This book was quick and easey to read. It really allowed me to get the basics of RET. Windy has a very nice style of writing and the book is broken down into steps which is very helpful.

This is book for practitioners of REBT and not for clients. It is a perfect companion to guide the therapist, step by step, while conducting a session.

This book is great for counseling students like me interested in REBT as a theoretical basis for understanding clients. I plan to primarily be an REBT-CBT therapist; however, as I learn new things I am figuring out how to integrate REBT with other forms of therapy.
