5.0 out of 5 stars Best of the book series so far
I have read the first three books in the series so far, in order, and Extinction Event stands out to me as by far the best I've read up to this point. 2.0 out of 5 stars Rather dreary
Steven Savile's Shadow of the Jaguar was really not the best start for the Primeval series of adult novels. The team seemed always to be pulled along by events and never seemed to get a handle on the plot. Neither do we. Perhaps it's because there is no direct encounter with the anomaly? In any case, the first quarter of the book sees the team of Professor Cutter and co...

This review is from: Primeval: Extinction Event (Bk. 1) (Hardcover)
I have read the first three books in the series so far, in order, and Extinction Event stands out to me as by far the best I've read up to this point. While the action takes off right away and remains steady to the end, this book is not as dark and relentlessly, oppressively dreary as its two predecessors. And ironically, I personally felt that this author made far better use of the characters and kept the main characters to the fore of the story. I could very easily visualize most of them, Connor especially, saying many of the things in the story. This book was very in keeping with all of the Primeverse, quoting from both the television program and the earlier books, and to me did quite well in keeping with the spirit of the show. The only thing I didn't like was the abrupt ending. But the subtitle is Book 1, right? So I can only hope there is a Book 2 out there somewhere soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars a fun read for Primeval fans, June 13, 2008
A fun book based on the UK scifi show called "Primeval". The book is a new adventure(not a novelization of an existing tv episode), and is in the same hardcover fromat and style of writing as the new Doctor Who novels. Definitely recommended for fans of the show.

5.0 out of 5 stars A ripping yarn for Primeval fans, January 31, 2009

(REAL NAME)
I've read a few tie-in novels in the past, and, as with all fiction, the quality can definitely vary. That said, I approached this book with great hope, and I'm absolutely delighted that I picked it up. The characterizations of all of the familiar characters (Lester, Cutter, Stephen, Abby, Connor, and Jenny all appear) are absolutely spot-on from their sources, and the new and peripheral characters are all well-drawn and interesting. As well, the book does what all good tie-ins should do - take the people we "know" and love and put them into scenarios that are both believable but so expansive that they might not be possible to show on tv. This tale takes our heroes away from their familiar shores and plunks them down into the South American jungle, and I really believed that they were there - they reacted to both their unfamiliar surroundings and the new threats they faced there exactly the way that I would expect, and even the familiar "redshirts" of the show, the sometimes-interchangeable soldiers became exciting and necessary support within the story. This is probably one of the five best tie-in novels that I've ever read, and I didn't hesitate to recommend it to my friends who also love the show, even buying a few extra copies to spread around. The only warning that I'd put on this is that it is a very adult story, with a lot of excitement but also a level of violence that I don't think I'd recommend to someone who doesn't have the stomach (which includes some adults!) or the maturity level to handle it (mid-teens should be fine). But if an adult story doesn't bother you, by all means, pick this up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lost but not forgotten, December 26, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This was a pretty good book, not quite as good as "Extinction Event" probably because I like a mixture of all the characters, Cutter and Stephan were in it a bit more. Also a number of extraneous characters given too much in the book but still good.

I purchased this book for my 11 yr old son. He loved it. He read it about 3x the first week. It definitely has the action/adventure that would appeal to a boy of this age.

Steven Savile's Shadow of the Jaguar was really not the best start for the Primeval series of adult novels. The team seemed always to be pulled along by events and never seemed to get a handle on the plot. Neither do we. Perhaps it's because there is no direct encounter with the anomaly? In any case, the first quarter of the book sees the team of Professor Cutter and co. flying down to Peru and checking in to their hotel. Yup, that's what they do alright. Then they blunder around for the rest of the book while a lot of secondary characters get eaten. Okay, it's not quite as bad as that -- not quite. If I had to describe this novel in one word it would be 'grueling' -- both for the characters and for the reader.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mostly for fans of the show, November 15, 2011
This entry in the series of novels built around the popular UK science fiction TV show "Primeval" is not an ideal start point for anyone wishing to start reading "primeval" books. It makes references to relationships and events established in previous books ,thus giving new readers a sense of "chasing the game" ,so to speak .It is also a great deal more visceral and violent than any of the TV episodes and the more sensitive souls among its TV fan base need to exercise a modicum of caution in approaching this book. Some of the depictions of death are pretty graphic.

When a sea monster appears off the coast of uninhabited Guns Island ,near Ireland ,and devours a passing ship and its crew it sparks a potential international incident .Formerly claimed by the British ,its ownership is diputed between France and the Irish Republic.During World War 2 Britain had utilised the island as a base for ecperiments in biological warfare .Several anomalies have opened up across the island and dinosaurs from several peras of prehistory are roaming freely across the island .An expeditionary party is desopathched by the ARK ,including a military force , to invstigate and rectify the situation .The Irish government ,ever suspicious of British intent ,also send a military team to keep an eye on matters. The party must deal with the ravening creatures from the past ,the fierce almost inhuman cold and internal dissent to try and contain the problem before trying to escape back into their own era.

The book takes on the feel of a old -if violent -patrol movie ,with a small miltary outfit beset by larger and more imposing enemy forces. The tone is at times tartly cynical ,with the need to cover up potentially awkward incidents from the recent past .The action is plentiful ,if at times pretty bloody, and the characterisation accords well with the TV show.

One for the TV show fan ,but those unfamiliar with the series are best directed to start elsewhere in the book series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Possibly the best of the series., January 21, 2010

Exciting reading. The book somewhat takes you beyond the end of the third TV season. There is news that in 2011 the show will be brought back. I do hope so. Something for all ages and very clean for kids.
