5.0 out of 5 stars Best of the book series so far, September 8, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have read the first three books in the series so far, in order, and Extinction Event stands out to me as by far the best I've read up to this point. While the action takes off right away and remains steady to the end, this book is not as dark and relentlessly, oppressively dreary as its two predecessors. And ironically, I personally felt that this author made far better use of the characters and kept the main characters to the fore of the story. I could very easily visualize most of them, Connor especially, saying many of the things in the story. This book was very in keeping with all of the Primeverse, quoting from both the television program and the earlier books, and to me did quite well in keeping with the spirit of the show. The only thing I didn't like was the abrupt ending. But the subtitle is Book 1, right? So I can only hope there is a Book 2 out there somewhere soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars a fun read for Primeval fans, June 13, 2008
A fun book based on the UK scifi show called "Primeval". The book is a new adventure(not a novelization of an existing tv episode), and is in the same hardcover fromat and style of writing as the new Doctor Who novels. Definitely recommended for fans of the show.

5.0 out of 5 stars A ripping yarn for Primeval fans, January 31, 2009

I've read a few tie-in novels in the past, and, as with all fiction, the quality can definitely vary. That said, I approached this book with great hope, and I'm absolutely delighted that I picked it up. The characterizations of all of the familiar characters (Lester, Cutter, Stephen, Abby, Connor, and Jenny all appear) are absolutely spot-on from their sources, and the new and peripheral characters are all well-drawn and interesting. As well, the book does what all good tie-ins should do - take the people we "know" and love and put them into scenarios that are both believable but so expansive that they might not be possible to show on tv. This tale takes our heroes away from their familiar shores and plunks them down into the South American jungle, and I really believed that they were there - they reacted to both their unfamiliar surroundings and the new threats they faced there exactly the way that I would expect, and even the familiar "redshirts" of the show, the sometimes-interchangeable soldiers became exciting and necessary support within the story. This is probably one of the five best tie-in novels that I've ever read, and I didn't hesitate to recommend it to my friends who also love the show, even buying a few extra copies to spread around. The only warning that I'd put on this is that it is a very adult story, with a lot of excitement but also a level of violence that I don't think I'd recommend to someone who doesn't have the stomach (which includes some adults!) or the maturity level to handle it (mid-teens should be fine). But if an adult story doesn't bother you, by all means, pick this up.
