I may be a little biased. I have known the Mccoy brothers for quite some time and have been pleasantly surprised by the way their music has grown and expanded over the years. I had their first cd and if you play the two, you'd never know they were the same band. Of course, several of the members have changed. To top it off with, they are also quite easy on the eyes (just take a look at Shaun). These guys are extremely talented on the guitar, and great writers. I have great anticipation for the next album...MASON COUNTY RULEZ!!!!!!!!

Well I went to The Rock Nightclub in Maplewood, Minnesota last night to see a local band called Five Ounces. After they played, this band who I had never heard of took the stage.. This band was Bobaflex... Wow... Their music was hard and intense, their performance was insanely energetic, these guys flatout rocked. From the first song to the last, they gave it everything they had and the crowd loved it. As soon as they played the last note of their last song I rushed over to their table and bought the Primitive Epic CD. And while it lacks the raw intensity of their live show and at times even seems much more mellow than what they did on stage, this is still an amazing CD. I just hope I get a chance to see these guys live again real soon.

Just as the rap-rock scene is winding down, Bobaflex come forth with a unique twist on a watered down genre. Not only do they add more crunch to the sound, but they cover atypical topics in their lyrics. Bobaflex call their troops to order on "Bobaflex Warriors". This militant anthem, complete with hail chants, explains that the warriors are meant to protect the New Humans, which are a non-violent group, unlike their forefathers. Within the lyrics Bobaflex advises the listener "within this album hides a code". "Midnight Nation" starts off with a somber guitar interlude, but pounds your speakers with heavy riffs and angry vocals shortly thereafter. Addiction takes center stage on "Medicine". This guitar driven track will have you jumping in place, as Bobaflex wages a lyrical war on those who block out painful memories with drugs.

A carnival like atmosphere is set with the opening piano on "Tears Drop". It's the story of a 300 year old being that is reflecting on all the people he's lost over the years. "The Predicament" is aptly titled. Sounding a little like Eminem on this track, Bobaflex tells the tale of two lovers returning from a drug pick up. They get stopped by the Police and the girlfriend offers her body to help set them free. When was the last time you heard something like that on the radio? Drawing from events from today's headlines, the group turns up the potency on "Turn the Heat Up". The album ends with a melodic and hardcore vocal battle on "Doomwalker". Once again the McCoy brothers return to their sci-fi influences as aliens attack the world and kill us all.

Bottom Line:
Heavy music, with a complex message. Bobaflex's brand of rap-rock has more balls than some of the watered-down crap on the radio. The dual vocals, one melodic, one hardcore, help add dimension to the music. No one can accuse them of being unoriginal.
