5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Early 80's, February 11, 2000
By
Taylor (San Jose, California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Primitive Man (Audio CD)
This was the first Icehouse album I ever heard. It was back in 1983 and I had been reading the Trouser Press Guide to New Wave Music (still in print?) at the public library. I was attempting to find albums to check out that I found in the book and, low and behold, one of the few the library had was Primitive Man. Once I had it home, I could not believe what I was hearing. The album starts off with the cut "Uniform" (a standout) and only gets better from there. Cuts like Great "Southern Land", "Trojan Blue" and "Street Cafe" (perhaps the best cut off of the album) are tight dependable early 80's synth-pop. Icehouse was often accused of being derivative, but given their proximity to the founding of the New Romantic Movement, this disc is ubdoubtedly an original. Although Iva Davies (founder and chief architect of the group's sound) pretty much eliminated his band from this recording effort, it shows a significant development in melodic content over their first release. Altough not as raw in its presentation as their first outing, Primitve Man presents the first hint of what was to come later on releases such as Measure for Measure and Man of Colours. A truly inspirational album. Anybody that wishes to understand the developmental history of synth-bands from the mid to late 80's must own this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Big Hits!, March 3, 2000
This review is from: Primitive Man (Audio CD)
another 4 and a half star album. "hey little girl" , "great southern land", "street cafe", "love in motion" and the sleeper hit "goodnite mr.mathews", don't forget about the weird " glam" and "uniform" and "trojan blue" which shows a brillant song writer in the making. only setback, some songs sound "dated" A Must Have

5.0 out of 5 stars Deepest Icehouse, February 18, 2000

When I was young I use to hear in the radio classics hits as Electric Blue, Crazy and Promises. After a long time, I started my investigation on Icehouse history, and I found more than hits. I found Primitive Man, a must in all synth-pop discography. A great album plenty of creativity and fresh sounds.
