Historical importance, and great music, too,

This review is from: Primitive Piano (Audio CD)
The great Erwin Helfer recorded these performances of vintage piano blues and jazz during the late 1950s. The performers were all old enough to have been on the scene in the 20s, but their styles hadn't changed. What we get on this record is at times quite stunning, especially the haunting blues of James Robinson and Doug Suggs or the feisty barrelhouse piano of Speckled Red. Billie Pierce is also great, and her 'Florida Blues' is right in the thick of the female 'classic' blues tradition of Bessie Smith et al. The Sirens Records should be honored for making this material available to the public after all these years.
