Book Description

April 1, 2006 185459852X 978-1854598523

Anthony Sher’s enthralling account of the struggle—and the triumph – of bringing Primo Levi’s Auschwitz memoir to the stage. Sher tells how he first came across Levi’s book, of how he conceived the notion of adapting it, of the long-drawn-out negotiations, research trips to Auschwitz and of the struggle to stage his adaptation and remain true to Levi’s precepts. A critical success in both London’s West End and on Broadway.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sher's a master, August 10, 2006

This review is from: Primo Time (Paperback)
This makes every book on acting that Antony Sher has written that I've read. Though YEAR OF THE KING probably wins for sheer excitement and instructional value, PRIMO is also very valuable, and compulsively readable. Sher's voice, unpretentious, but in no way dumbed down guides us through the unique experience of a one man show, from it's penning through it's performance.

My only quibble is that this is obviously a first printing. Typos are frequent and occasionally absurd ("Previ Levi"?). In no way a comment on Sher, only on the publishing house and copy editor.

A wonderful book.
