I bought this toy for my 3-year-old daughter, who is advanced enough to appreciate this kind of thing. She really likes it, but so do I (I'm normally not that excited about dolls). In fact, I practically tried to take it from her when I discovered how beautifully the hair curled!
As for the child who mentioned the texture of the hair, I suspect that the plastic-like strands have to do with the ease with which the hair curls. The hair does tend to tangle easily though, so just be sure to get it combed through thoroughly before styling. Also, someone said it doesn't matter which race you purchase. Well I disagree, especially if you have a younger child whose self-image and confidence you're trying to nurture and help to flourish. RETAILERS SHOULD MAKE THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN VERSION MORE READILY AVAILABLE!!

I have been looking for months to find this doll for my daughter. I even called Mattel and tried to purchase it from them directly, but they said the volume was too low. I am appalled that in 2004 I still have to spend as much time searching for African-American dolls as my mom did for me. Thankfully, I contacted all of my relatives and my aunt living in Charlotte, NC. found it.
We need stores to request equal volumes of merchandise for all ethnic backgrounds. And for the customer who commented that the race doesn't matter - please be sensitive to the need of parents to ensure that our african american daughters grow up understanding that beauty is not always blond with blue eyes.

I think every one should have a chose on what they want. I am a total mess running around every department store trying to found this amazing doll as African American. I never had to work so hard for a toy that should have been equal amounts as the white barbie primp & polish dolls in all department stores.

I am very disappointed that the African-American Barbie Primp & Polish is not available in Prince George's County, a predominately African-Amercan County. I purchased the blonde model, hoping to be able to exchange it, but I will return it, because I prefer to buy dolls for my daughter that look more like her.

I'm very sorry that I cannot share my review with you all. I have searched high and low and have not been successful in finding this doll in the African American version. Although I've shopped at predominantly Afican American stores it is not available. I even tried various stores online and came up with nothing. [...]

SHAME ON YOU MATTEL- Where's the African-American Primp and Polish Doll?,

I'm extremely disappointed in Mattel for not producing an equal amount of African-American Primp and Polish.I've been searching all over the internet for this doll and I've not been able to find it. I feel it is important that African-American girls learn self confidence and to appreciate our beauty. That's hard to do when all you see in the shelves are white Barbie dolls with blond hair and blue eyes. Not too long ago, my daughter came home from school and told me that she wanted to have blond hair. I can't even begin to explain the pain I felt hearing those words come out of her mouth. It is important to praise your child and tell them how beautiful they are. When I was younger, I felt unpretty because there were a lack of dolls that represented my race. It was as if we were beautiful enough to be considered marketable. It is 2005 and still manufacturers aren't representing every race equally. SOMETHING MUST BE DONE!

This doll was very hard for me to find. It was in the sale paper which only show the caucasian version, which i feel is not fair at all. I finally found it in another state at a Wal-mart, which only had 2 on their shelves. I feel they should make the same amount of the African-American version just like the caucasian version. We live here too! Sandra, IL

It is a shame that africian american dolls are so limited! I have been trying for two weeks now to purchase this doll and still have not had any luck. Yesterday, I went on line with Wal-mart and both dolls (white & black) were not in stock. I go back on line today and the white doll is avaliable. Every store I go in there is a large quanity of the white dolls, but the black doll is unavaliable. What is the problem with this situation. I even went as far as calling Mattel the manufactor of the doll and they were not helpful. It's just a shame that america would think that the white doll would be more profitable than the black doll and therefore made a limited supply of the black doll. What a shame for America!

I have been searching for this doll for weeks now and can't find one single African American version of this doll. They are always unavailable online and in the store. Has Mattel or any other retailer heard of supply and demand? I refuse to buy a doll that my child can't relate too, as someone else on this review stated..VARIETY!!
I have not seen any caucasian children walking around with black babydolls, so why should my child have to walk around with a doll that does not look like her. Simply put..Make more dolls of diversity. There is a demand..so therefore supply!!!! It's almost 2006, Mattel wake up and smell the market!!!

I recently brought this doll for a child. The doll her felt like a wire and the hair would not curl. The little girl became frustrated and did not want to play with it anymore. I would not recommend anyone to purchase this doll.
