Book Description

10 and up5 and upPrince Albert
As told to 4 should-be sleepy, but wide-eyed girls.

Eight years ago, a young prince from a distant realm was kidnapped and hidden from his evil Father. On Earth, ten year old Albert Prince knows nothing of his past or the hope that the people of the realm have that he will defeat his evil Father and save them from the Monarch's oppressive rule. But the cruel King is looking for his son and will stop at nothing to retrieve him.

Albert is thrust into a world he never knew existed as he flees from the strange human/animal creatures pursuing him. His only chance is a stranger-yet ability he never knew he had, the ability to transform into a lion.

Thus begins the enchanting Prince Albert epic, a spell-binding tale of growth, destiny and the true meaning of family.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ummm...., February 25, 2006
This review is from: Prince Albert in a Can (Prince Albert, Book 1) (Paperback)
Okay, I started this eagerly enough, but after a few pages...oh, gosh. Where do I begin?

Let's start with the astonishing amount of typos. This had to be self published. If I'd read it with a red pen it would be severely marked up by now. There were probably twenty mistakes per page; I found myself wanting to insert a quotation mark, a comma, or a period every five seconds.

It was repetitive. Here's a sample:

"Stepping forward, Albert crushed a can under his foot. Shocked by the crunch, he stepped back and saw that he had crushed a root beer can."

What is wrong with this? Here's my edited version:

"As he stepped forward, something crunched beneath Albert's foot. He looked down and saw a crushed root beer can."

Not brilliant, but seriously, it's better than the previous passage. The whole book is written awkwardly, using "tell-don't-show" reasoning. It TELLS you whenever Lisa is mad, it TELLS you what every character is thinking. It's just...problematic. Unlike most books, in which the story is so good I can't wait to turn the page, this one had me wincing for the author, who is a full-grown man. Even ERAGON is written better, and that's by a kid.

I don't get why someone said this is better than Harry Potter. In my humble opinion, it is most definitely not.

I gave two stars for the interesting story.

I loved this book! It reminds me of Harry Potter but is easier to read. Its imaginative plot entertains while delivering a message about the rewards of courage in a difficult family situation, with acceptance of other people and of other cultures as part loving extended family.
