This review is from: Prince Albert in a Can (Prince Albert, Book 1) (Paperback)
Okay, I started this eagerly enough, but after a few pages...oh, gosh. Where do I begin?
Let's start with the astonishing amount of typos. This had to be self published. If I'd read it with a red pen it would be severely marked up by now. There were probably twenty mistakes per page; I found myself wanting to insert a quotation mark, a comma, or a period every five seconds.
It was repetitive. Here's a sample:
"Stepping forward, Albert crushed a can under his foot. Shocked by the crunch, he stepped back and saw that he had crushed a root beer can."
What is wrong with this? Here's my edited version:
"As he stepped forward, something crunched beneath Albert's foot. He looked down and saw a crushed root beer can."
Not brilliant, but seriously, it's better than the previous passage. The whole book is written awkwardly, using "tell-don't-show" reasoning. It TELLS you whenever Lisa is mad, it TELLS you what every character is thinking. It's just...problematic. Unlike most books, in which the story is so good I can't wait to turn the page, this one had me wincing for the author, who is a full-grown man. Even ERAGON is written better, and that's by a kid.
I don't get why someone said this is better than Harry Potter. In my humble opinion, it is most definitely not.
I gave two stars for the interesting story.
Rating: Terrible

Looking for the next book in the series!, June 12, 2006
This review is from: Prince Albert in a Can (Prince Albert, Book 1) (Paperback)
I loved this book! It reminds me of Harry Potter but is easier to read. Its imaginative plot entertains while delivering a message about the rewards of courage in a difficult family situation, with acceptance of other people and of other cultures as part loving extended family.
