Hailing from the sultry metropolitan landscape of Austin, TX, Explosions In The Sky are some of the most sincere folks you will ever meet. Aside from being nice guys, they play some of the most passionate, powerful instrumental music you will ever hear. Equal parts romance and tragedy, their beautiful melodies have the tendency to ignite into head-spinning walls of noise. Easily one of the ... Read more in Amazon's Explosions in the Sky Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Score, Good Album from Explosions in the Sky August 28, 2013
Format:Audio CD
David Gordon Green is one of the strangest filmmakers out there. The man who was once hailed as the heir-apparent to Terrence Malick (through his early work, All The Real Girls and George Washington) started making breezy stoner comedies like Pineapple Express, The Sitter, and Your Highness. His most recent film, Prince Avalanche, looks to strike a balance between the two worlds: an existential film wearing the clothes of a half-baked comedy. Green has used David Wingo as his go-to composer for all but a handful of movies, so it's not so much a surprise that he's returning to compose Prince Avalanche. What is a surprise is that Wingo is doing it with the Texas post-rock group Explosions in the Sky.

Explosions in the Sky are no stranger to having their music used for scoring purposes. Critically acclaimed television show Friday Night Lights used the band's music heavily and to great effect. Because the instrumental band is pretty good at creating beautiful, sweeping arrangements, their work ends up in a lot of films and commercials. The band's last album, Take Care, Take Care, Take Care was released in 2011, so 2013's Prince Avalanche feels like a bit of a stop-gap. Fans looking for a true Explosions in the Sky record will probably be disappointed by the mostly quiet subdued soundtrack. This isn't an outright LP, it's a collaboration.

As a collaboration between Explosions in the Sky and David Wingo, it's often very difficult to tell where one artist ends and the other begins on this soundtrack. The hallmarks of the band, long songs with plenty of dynamics and movements, are mostly removed from Prince Avalanche. The bulk of the music here barely makes it over the 2-minute mark.

5.0 out of 5 stars This album... September 26, 2013
By Theresa
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
isn't going to be like your usual really amazing Explosions in the Sky albums of strong amplified electric guitar, some synthesizers, and the standard climatic elements that make their music so incredible. Rather, with this CD there is more of a ruralistic feel/sound to it like someone is doing a jig on a farm, just having a great time, without a care in the world or maybe it is more like they are driving throughout the countryside on a beautiful afternoon in their convertible and just realizing how beautiful life really is. It is a pretty happy-go-lucky kind of album. It seemingly uses new kinds of instruments, like percussion instruments and even the piano in order to create a new and authentic sound that is reflective of the experiences and emotions one feels while in the places shown in the film. It's essentially very nature-based. Anyways, I hope my review was okay but I was basically describing how I personally feel when I get to listen to this great album in my car. It's very mellow and calming unlike some of Explosions in the Sky's earlier albums even though those are also equally great if not greater.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing! March 24, 2014
By Zencik
Format:Audio CD
If you've seen Prince Avalanche (great film!) then you probably haven't been able to get the amazing score out of your head. The music is simply beautiful and a character within the film itself. The album is worth purchasing alone for the track "Climb Up On My Avalanche".
