The focus of the book is the artwork, and not the text.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Prince of Egypt (Hardcover)
The model for a "Making of ..." book must be "Toy Story" by John Lassetter & Steve Daly. It had artwork and designs from preliminary sketches through to realized shots, coupled with stories, techniques and anecdotes about the entire production start to finish.Prince of Egypt comes close on the artwork front, but tends toward showing the final shots and some minor development work. The text is more concerned with captions for the pictures, with a section at the end of the book for some technique overviews and personal interviews. Having said all this, for anyone (and I mean anyone!) who even remotely appreciates the artwork that animation is capable of rendering then this book is a must. The design of Prince of Egypt is the star of this book and to some degree the film too. If you are looking for an indepth story of the films' production you will be disappointed. If you are looking for a record of the amazing work that is displayed on the theatre screen, then you can't go wrong with this title. I recommend it as one of most visually stunning books around.

This review is from: The Prince of Egypt: A New Vision in Animation (Hardcover)
When The Prince of Egypt came out in 1998, it featured some spectacular visual effects ever used in animation. In this book, it shows the art and research done for the movie. It includes set paintings, storyboards and character designs. The production design is excellent. The mood of old Egypt is recreated perfectly with the amazing use of lighting and restricted colour palette. The text throughout explain the process of making the animation. For example, it talks about the difficulty in portraying Moses, on how costumes had to be designed to look Egyptian, on looking for the right actors for voice acting and more. At the back of the book is the summary on all areas of production. It includes, the story structure, design, layout, voices, animation, backgrounds, music and effects. This is a great art book. A new vision in animation.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Prince of Egypt (Hardcover)
The Prince of Egypt is the first animated film in history to SUCCESSFULLY integrate both traditional cell animation and computer generated images. A breathtaking film, with a scope rarely seen in films today, much less ANIMATED films. The Dreamworks team is a formidible new force in animation - they treat animation as an art form and as a storytelling medium. Not as a summer PRODUCT, like the Disney team. Disney could only hope to produce something this good.

This review is from: Prince of Egypt (Hardcover)
Usually, I am a bit weary of animated films that come to the big screen, but the graceful and original animation caught my eye from Dreamworks' first animated feature.
With voice talents including Michelle Pfeiffer, Val Kilmer, Danny Glover, Martin Short, Steve Martin, Sandra Bullock, & several others, it's easy to see why this film has attracted many audiences. Though I'm not usually a fan of biblical stories, Dreamworks created it in a way that was relatable to everyone. Still, they could have gone with fewer songs... This book is one of the greatest buys I've ever made. With the exception of The Lion King, the brilliant animation is captured throughout the book with great storyboards, conceptual art, and vast background paintings that are truly a treat to marvel at. This is one of the rare books that I am genuinely proud to include in my library. Even if you're not a fan of the movie, this book contains great pieces of inspirational works that will make you wish you were an animator.

good book,

This review is from: Prince of Egypt (Hardcover)
This book has some great images from the Prince of Egypt including stills from the movie, production work, and pre-production work. Unfortunately there's not a lot of text in the book; it's mostly just images with small blurbs in the corner of each page expaning on the image. In fact the book could be classified almost as a picture book, and less as a documentary on the production of the movie. There are a few pages at the end devoted to interviews with the animators and the rest of the production staff which are very interesting, unfortunately it isn't very long or thorough. I would have liked to hear more about the actual techniques used by the animators, layout, etc. Also, even though the images in the book are quite beautiful, I wish there was more thumbails from the animators, and more rough animation. Almost all of the animation drawings were cleaned up, which I find far less interesting than seeing the animators original lines.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Prince of Egypt (Hardcover)
I read the book Prince of Egypt and I liked it. This is a book that you can learn from and go on a adventure. This book will show you how powerful God is. From this book you will find out that it is not a good idea to mess with god in a wrong way. Like the Pharaoh, he tried to go against of what god told him to do and his son ended up dyeing. Also Moses he was a stubborn Prince of Egypt and it is amazing how God changed him. Moses was born from a slave family and the Pharaoh sent his soldiers to kill all the new born. Moses mom sent Moses down a river hoping the river would take him to a safe place where Moses can live and grow up. Pharaoh's wife saw the baby and took him as her own and raised him as a Prince of Egypt. When Moses grows up he finds out that his real mom is a slave. Moses runs away from Egypt and lives in a desert for 40 years. During those 40 years God changed Moses and sends him back to Egypt to get his people out of slavery. Then Moses had to go and face his own brother and it is not a pretty site. |
