Prince From Another Planet

Elvis Aaron Presley was born to Vernon and Gladys Presley in a two-room house in Tupelo, Mississippi, on January 8, 1935. His twin brother, Jessie Garon, was stillborn, leaving Elvis to grow up as an only child. He and his parents moved to Memphis, Tennessee, in 1948, and Elvis graduated from Humes High School there in 1953.

Elvis’ musical influences were the pop and country music ... Read more in Amazon's Elvis Presley Store

Editorial Reviews

Of all the live concert recordings released by RCA during Elvis Presley's lifetime, none carried the historic significance of his long-awaited New York City shows at Madison Square Garden in June 1972. Now, a pair of hour-long performances have finally been coupled in one package for the first time as Prince From Another Planet: 40th Anniversary Edition.
Prince From Another Planet takes its title from a New York Times headline that accompanied its rave review of the King of Rock 'n' Roll's four sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden (80,000 tickets sold), the weekend of Friday through Sunday, June 9-11, 1972. CD two reprises the Saturday night show in its entirety, some 20 songs (plus introductions) originally issued on LP on June 18, 1972, just eight days after the concert took place. CD one reprises the (slightly longer) Saturday afternoon show, some 23 songs (plus introductions), archived and issued for the first time 25 years later in 1997, on CD.
Accompanying the two CDs is a bonus DVD that presents unseen footage of the Saturday afternoon show, captured on hand-held camera by a fan, and now acquired by Legacy from that fan decades later for this package. Rarely is unseen footage of Elvis in concert discovered, so this footage lends historical importance to the package. The film is a revealing portrait of a physically commanding Elvis and his power house TCB Band, background vocalists, and orchestra.

DVD includes:
20 minute "mini documentary" featuring footage from the June 9th press conference, the June 9th evening show, the June 10th afternoon show plus new interviews with Lenny Kaye, James Burton and Glenn D. Hardin, Joe Guercio, and Jerry Schilling.

The complete NBC-New York film of the June 9th press conference. Approximately 12 minutes.

The June 10th afternoon show (complete audio) with approximately 20 minutes of fan-shot 8mm film synched with the newly mixed audio, including a complete performance of "That's All Right".

5.0 out of 5 stars better than ever November 14, 2012
Format:Audio CD
I have just compared the sound on this with the old release, and the difference is staggering Elvis voice is much clearer, the instruments are better seperated and there are a better concert feeling ,it is almost like a whole new recording. The booklet is really cool , beautiful pictures and an interesting essay. Be aware that there are many "black/blank spots without pictures on the DVD, but it is still one of the most interesting concert movies to come out since the 57 Tupelo welcome Elvis home. I would have given this 10 Stars if I could !!! Buy it even if you don't like Elvis, this will change your mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars The All-Time Champ Conquers Madison Square Garden November 17, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Of all the Elvis box sets released over the years this one,Prince From Another Planet, has to rank as one of the absolute best. The over-all design is stunningly beautiful. The booklet alone should win an award. But it's the music,as it always is with THE artist of anyone's lifetime, that stands out the most.YOU HAVE NEVER HEARD THESE CONCERTS LIKE THIS BEFORE.The sound is absolutely incredible.I hear things from Elvis I haven't heard on the other Madison Square CD's.Aloha from Hawaii-via satellite is still the high water mark for me.Aloha has only one true rival....Elvis rockin the Garden in 1972.El and his band never sounded better. They were in complete sync from beginning to end.Elvis himself is a instrument. The TCB Band really cooks...The Sweets never sounded better...and the orchestra was spot on.The set-list ranks has one of his best and creative...oldies,newies and in-betweenies...Elvis rocks it all.But the cream of this set is the DVD featuring footage taken by a fan during the afternoon performance.Amazingly up-close and clear for a 9mm from 72.The fan didn't film every second so there are moments when the screen is black but they handled it briliantly...letting the music play and the footage comes in when they have it.Elvis was truly magnificent at the Garden...this cd/dvd set rises to the level of the event it chronicles and deserves all the prasie and attention it can get. This one is truly worth....everything.Elvis had to sing...we had to hear it...and this set deserves your time and attention.ENJOY THIS MASTERPIECE.

5.0 out of 5 stars Prince? Make that King! November 26, 2012
Format:Audio CD
It's been a while since a new Elvis release generated as much publicity as `Prince From Another Planet'. Especially in the US, the set received a great deal of attention, with even `Rolling Stone' posting footage from the June 10th, 1972 afternoon show on its website. But also here in Denmark, it got a rave review in the leading daily newspaper `Ekstra Bladet' by music journalist Thomas Treo, who is best-known for his often rather vitriolic reviews. With this being a release focusing on 70s Elvis, you'd think that `Prince' was in for a brutal mauling, but instead Treo wrote the kind of review that you'd expect from an Elvis fan magazine. Very nice to see this kind of exposure for Elvis in 2012.

And indeed there is much to like about 'Prince From Another Planet' - the title being a reference to a New York Times review of Elvis' first show at Madison Square Garden on June 9th, 1972. Housed in 8" x 8" packaging, this set looks very eye-catching, with an iconic shot of Elvis at the Garden as taken by MSG staff photographer George Kalinski shot on the cover. You can tell that the Jřrgensen / Semon team really `went to town' on this release. The 50-page booklet is lavish and contains photos of the 4 MSG concerts, memorabilia, the original tape boxes as well as an interesting essay by Patti Smith-guitarist Lenny Kaye, who attended both the press conference as well as the first show as a journalist for Cavalier magazine. It was a smart move by Sony to involve people like Kaye and renowned New York audio wizard Michael Bauer (Coldplay, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, etc) for this project. This has given this release extra credibility and thus more exposure in the music press.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome show November 21, 2012
Format:Audio CD
I'm not a huge fan of live cd/lp collection. I rather listen to a studio album. But Elvis' concerts in Madison Square Garden are something else. I won't go with product description or reviews since most people here already done that.
For those of you actually interested in the film clips, I will lay down the actual show as it was recorded by a fan on super 8mm film and presented in the DVD. Most of the song are incomplete with some only lasting like ten seconds.

0:00-4:50, Intro, That's All Right, Mama, Proud Mary (the latter one incomplete)
6:54-8:42, 8:52-9:43, I Never Been To Spain (incomplete)
19:26-20:33, Polk Salad Annie
25:12-25:43, 25:46-26:52, Heartbreak Hotel
31:42-31:53, Reconsider Baby (Only 11 seconds of this baby. What a shame!)
34:17-36:21, Hound Dog (complete)
37:07-37:53, 38:14-38:30, I'll Remember You (incomplete)
40:16-41:56, 42:15-42:40, 42:49-43:37, Suspicious Minds
44:02-44:27, Introduction by Elvis (incomplete)
50:18-51:08, 51:33-52:24, An American Trilogy (incomplete)
59:39-60:00, End Theme

I hope it is of any use for all those Elvis maniacs (like me) out there! Enjoy this incredible box set.
