Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Western culture, contends Gurian ( The Odyssey of Telemachus ) discourages fathers from nurturing their children and freely expressing paternal love . As a result, sons often feel alienated from their fathers and, in turn, from themselves; this, in Gurian's view, negatively affects their relationships with their lovers, spouses, children and co-workers. In this addition to the growing body of "men's movement" literature, he uses myths and Jungian archetypes to explore the father-son legacy, advising adult sons how to heal the filial relationship's wounds by embarking on a "heroic quest" with the aid of such tools as journal keeping, letter writing, visualization, meditation, focused recall and confrontation. By finally forgiving their fathers, he argues, men can transform themselves from insecure, immature "princes" into strong yet nurturing "kings." The symbolism and numerous references to legend and psychological theory may put some readers off this warm, sensitive and insightful book.

From Library Journal

Gurian (English, Gonzaga Univ.), author of The Odyssey of Telemachus (Swallow Song Pr., 1990), turns his attention toward the men's movement. Those (men) wanting to rid themselves of any psychological or emotional injury caused by estranged or inappropriate fathering will find this book most helpful. It continues the battle to identify, philosophize, and construct the workable adult male self-concept begun by Herb Goldberg's New Male ( LJ 11/1/79), David Feinstein and Stanley Krippner's Personal Mythology (Tarcher, dist. by St. Martin's, 1988), Robert Bly's Iron John ( LJ 11/15/90), and Sam Keen's Fire in the Belly ( LJ 2/15/91). Gurian provides a series of exercises (some psychologically painful) to typify one's father-son relationship (i.e., his "king" to your "prince"), what the present status of the relationship is, and how to confront one's father and begin living as a fully self-confident adult male. Recommended for libraries where the men's movement is hot.
