Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-7-- The subject of Fisher's historical picture book is well chosen for publication prior to the 500th anniversary of the journeys of Columbus. In the same dramatic black-and-white pictorial style he used for The Great Wall of China (Macmillan, 1986), The Alamo (Holiday, 1987), and The Tower of London (Macmillan, 1987), Fisher tells the story of the Portuguese ruler. The book opens with a list of dates and a carefully crafted map of the Iberian peninsula and the African continent. The pages that follow show the expeditions organized and financed from Prince Henry's library and school of navigation at Sagres, on the Portuguese shore. Dramatic scenes of sailing ships, pictures of navigational tools such as the astrolabe and compass, and a double-page spread of the first caravel highlight the achievements of Prince Henry and downplay the fact that the prince stayed at home, too busy to lead the explorations himself. Excellent book design, dramatic pictures, and meticulous research make this a distinguished informational introduction. --Shirley Wilton, Ocean County College, Toms River, NJ
