About the Author

Niccolo Machiavelli was born in Florence in 1469. In 1498, he was appointed Second Chancellor of the Florentine Republic; in 1501, he was imprisoned and tortured when the Medici returned to Florence. Upon his release, he retired to his farm to study and write.

THE PRINCE is a deeply informed manual of strategy and statesmanship from the Renaissance. Machiavellis advice for rulers is so informed by real politick that it still shocks readers even today. However, while Rider Strongs delivery is always clear and easy to follow, it is so matter-of-fact that this shock may be minimized. In other words, the production lacks drama. When Machiavelli writes of the need to kill this faction or that, for example, Strongs delivery is too calm for such explosive subject matter. As a result, this unabridged recording is more useful for those already familiar with Machiavellis classic work than for those new to the text. I bought this Audio CD because I have about 20 books to read this semester and this book was available in audio format. This turned out to be a very enjoyable way to "read" my required book! I would have preferred that Anthony Hopkins read it to this actor, but I'm sure he wasn't available. Highly recommended.
