a rather strange, interesting movie,

This is not a great film. It may not even be a very good one, but I have yet to see a performance by Keanu Reeves that I didn't find fascinating. In this oddball dark comedy, which does have some very funny scenes, he is terrific. He also has wonderful chemistry with Amy Madigan and a killer haircut !

KEANU REEVES FANS STEP THIS WAY,
By A Customer
This review is from: Prince of Pennsylvania [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This movie is quite good. It's a quirky piece (not always a mainstream man is our Mr Reeves) and Keanu shows promise for his comedic turns in later films. The storyline may not be an armchair thriller, but it works. Dysfunctional family, odd romance, kidnap (no ransom)spiked coffee. Keanu shows his youthful exuberance again as the misfit teen with a special gift for mechanical stuff and scheming. It's no blockbuster, but it conveys small town life well and that everyone's business IS everyone's business. The only escape is to get outta there. Love the hairdo Ke!

Young wacky and crazy Keanu,

An offbeat film with offbeat characters. Keanu is fun but the older woman he has an affair with was definitely miscast. There is no believability in the chemical attraction there. Keanu kidnaps his Dad for money but his plan backfires. The whole family is offbeat and a little wacky. Watch only if you're a Keanu fan.Marilyn in Florida

The Prince Of Pennsylvania,

This is a nice story about a coming of age young man who isplayed by Keanu Reeves as Rupert. You follow Rupert through a part of his teen age life with friends a nd family, and all the happiness and problems life has to offer in a small Pennsylva nia town. I did like this movie and don't forget the twist in the movie plot!On a personal note this movie was filmed in and around the Pittsburgh,PA area. I even ha d the privilege to be one of the movie extra's in the coal mining scenes. Only four of the seven scenes I was in made the movie but it was great to meet and work with Keanu, Fred, Bonnie and the funniest person I know Amy Madigan.

Not a great film, but Keanu Reeves is always fun to see!,

I thought this was really cute movie. Keanu plays a young man having an affair with an older woman. I thought their relationship was very sweet. The odd couple kidnap Keanu's Dad for the ransom money...except his Mom doesn't want the Dad back because she is having an affair! This is really an offbeat kind of film, which is what makes it so enjoyable. Nothing spectacular, but worth the effort. Extra bonus if you are a Keanu fan. He looks adorable in it!

This is a pretty good movie. It has some extremely funny scenes! And if your a Keanu Reeves fan you'll want to see it. There's a simi nude scene before the abdominal scar, he looks young and even cuter than he is now if that's even possiable, and he pretty funny in this movie too.

Picture a small Pennsylvania mining town where a gangly doofus named Rupert (Reeves), who always appears to be stoned, rubs everyone the wrong way with his irritating personality, grating speech patterns, and...wait, all that was kind of redundant.
If you can get past the fact that there was a lot more Bill and Ted in Keanu before Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, this movie comes down to a familial struggle between a hard-working father and his screw up, dropout son (who has a stupid haircut). Amidst petty affairs and big dreams, Rupert meanders throughout life like a jaded stoner destined a life-pinnacle at a bowling alley or convenience store. In order to get out of this rut, he concocts a plan involving an ice cream shop, a kidnapping, and more flaws than any hair-brained idea thought up on Scooby Doo. Fred Ward shines as the hard-working, traditional patriarch who deals stoically with his bonehead son. So, minus Keanu, it's a role right up his wheelhouse. Several bit characters comprise the rest of the cast, people whose faces are known but their names are relatively insignificant. The odd, borderline disgusting romance between Keanu and Amy Madigan - 15 years his senior and horribly miscast - is never believable, and has about as much romance and spark as skid-marked underwear. Simply put, the movie conveys small-town life with simply problems fairly well, but none of the characters (save Fred Ward) are portrayed or written well enough to elicit anything other than contempt. Keanu fans will enjoy this a lot more than anyone else, but otherwise it's a forgettable movie with mostly good acting and a boring plot. Jason Elin

I watched this on IFC the other day. It's very cute, fluffy and fun, but there were some serious issues in it, too. Excellent cast. Rupert is a great character, and I find myself hoping that things worked out for him, silly as that may sound.

it's good to see that 80s movies get a DVD release - pity they don't bother putting subtitles options, I would have really appreciated it. I wasn't expecting any extras, but the subtitles would have been very welcome.
The movie is still a great watch after all these years... |
