GameSpot Review

The very second that you turn the Game Boy on with the new version of Prince of Persia plugged in, you're reminded that the game is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. To those who were around playing the game when it first came out, it serves as a somber reminder of time wasted with a joypad in their hands. To everyone else, it's a sign that what you're about to play is a decade old. This colorized version of Prince of Persia is almost exactly the same as the monochrome release that you can still pick up cheap. In many ways it's a good example of "old school" gaming and why we've moved on since then. When Prince of Persia made its debut, it drew rapturous praise from anyone who played it. The adventures of a young prince of what we today call Iraq took you on a subterranean adventure, avoiding traps, engaging in sword fights with guards, and solving puzzles - all against the clock. Cutscenes in between the dozen levels kept the generic but still well-told "rescue the princess from the evil guy" storyline moving. It was the closest the '80s ever came to seeing an interactive movie. The problem here is that era is thankfully over, but POP hasn't been updated one bit since then. Things that gamers just accepted back then are still here and prove to be incredibly frustrating compared with a modern platformer. The first and most obvious aspect is the control. Motion-captured sprites may have turned heads back when Milli Vanilli was still in vogue, but these days they can't hide an unresponsive control system. The animation isn't even that great by today's standards either - heck, even Abe from Abe's Adventure looks more realistic and is far easier to control. You need to plan your actions a half-second ahead of time when navigating platforms, and fight sequences can end far quicker than expected when it takes an age to draw your blade. In a rather spectacular design blunder, pressing Down in a battle makes you put away your sword, leaving you, "Obi-Wan vs. Darth Vader" style, rather vulnerable to attack. There is only one time in the whole game where you will need to disarm yourself during a fight (and we're not going to say when, of course), so making it this easy to get yourself killed during the rest of the game is crazy. This brings us nicely to our next complaint. Dying from any of the game's many traps, pitfalls, and design flaws brings you back to the beginning of the level, forcing you to start all over again. While you get as many lives as you could want within the hour time limit, playing through all that stage's flip-scrolling screens over again can get really tedious, really quickly. It would have been nice to have restart points or not have to take on the same enemies over and over again. In its defense, Prince of Persia features some of the best 2D platform level design ever seen. Each screen in the early levels has a trap, secret switch, or feature that slowly teaches you skills and tricks that prove essential later on in the game. Careful exploration of levels rewards you with health potions and time-saving shortcuts. In short, completing a stage feels like a positive accomplishment rather than just surviving an endurance test. As far as colorization goes, they've done quite an impressive job here. Each level has its own color scheme, and characters are brightly and distinctively dressed. Overall, it looks as good as the excellent Sega Master System conversion of many years back, without any of that system's annoying sprite flicker or slowdown. So is the Game Boy Color version of Prince of Persia worth buying? We're going to give it a qualified recommendation. POP has always been more of a long-term sit-down game that requires concentration, so if you're the type who just wants a fast-paced game to play while waiting for the bus, choose something else. If you have the patience to put up with the sometimes aggravating design and want to see what all the fuss is about, you will be rewarded with a fun and sometimes clever game. --Cameron Davis

4.0 out of 5 stars Prince of Portability, June 9, 2000
By A Customer
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Prince of Persia (Game Cartridge)
Purchasing this game for Gameboy was a compulsion arising from early days before anyone had heard of a Pentium Processor. Now, with the antiqued computer game given new birth on the portable console, I must say that I was relieved to find the game play very similiar. The Prince of Persia plays off the well known tale of Jaffar and Aladdin, only in this non-Disney movie, Aladdin must stop Jaffar from taking the Sultan's kingdom and daughter. To do this, he must escape thirteen different, meandering dungeons in which he is a prisoner. It is a shining example of how a 2-D game should be laid out, with multiple levels for the character to climb and jump, traps to catch those not paying enough attention, and glorious sword fights with an AI who is not predictable. There is also a password feature that allows the user to put down and pick up the game whenever desired, useful for the fact that the game, all thirteen levels combined, has a time limit. The game can be played in six different languages, so hopefully the player knows at least one of them. The most appealing characteristic of The Prince of Persia is the fluid movement of the elements in each level. Indeed eyes will water even at the opening scene as they watch the Princess' dress whirl about her while she turns to face Jaffar. Keeping this game out of the five star bracket however, is the fact that after a while the gameplay can get repetetive. The best way to counter this is to put it down for a few hours and come back later. This game promises great entertainment for the user and is a great buy. By far it is one of the best values for portable color game system, if not one of the best games.

I have had this game for a little while and I haven't even gotten to the third level! Basically you go around and fight the guards, they are almost impossible to beat! You get passwords for the thirteen levels and you can play it in 6 different languages. Overall it is an okay game if you are looking for something that will take you a long time to beat!

4.0 out of 5 stars Prince of Persia, February 8, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Prince of Persia (Game Cartridge)
I love this game quite a lot. I own all the Prince of Persia games for all the systems. Anyway, I suggest you try and find this game. There are 12 levels. (Some people call the level where you fight jaffar and save the princess as two separate levels. This is not true. If you played the Mac or PC version, it will clearly say, "LEVEL 12" for both.)This game is cool.
