I was not a fan of this book. I kept reading just to see what all the rage was about. I'm not sure why people love this book so much. Average plot, somewhat original storyline, and average writing. I'd try other writers in this field for more engaging reading (I highly recommend The Bride Finder & Night Drifter for comparison as to how this type of story...

I have to say I LOVED this book. Kieran Holt and Alex were a good match. Krinard's writing has a level of detail and characterization that is uncommon in the romance industry and which I found vastly appealing.

Strengths: Krinard made you really feel for Kieran and his troubled life. Alex's struggles to overcome self esteem and past trauma issues were moving. Even the villain's struggles were gripping. I enjoyed the level of detail revealed in Alex's work as a wolf researcher. The environmental themes were insightful and not preachy.

I particularly liked the scenes when Alex was Shadow.Very cute.

Problems: I really had no problems with this book. Since it is a romance the main focus was on the two main characters and their struggles, I couldn't help but find myself curious about the other sub plot characters and what was going on with them.. I would like to have seen Kieran explore more of his people's heritage, preferably in the company of his own kind, as he had barely begun the rode towards self acceptance and healing at the end of this book.

Overall, an excellent read..

4.0 out of 5 stars It wasn't hard to fall in love with Kieran Holt., November 30, 1998

This review is from: Prince of Shadows (Mass Market Paperback)
This was a beautiful and tender love story between a werewolf and a wolf researcher. Unlike other werewolf novels currently on the market, Prince of Shadows plays down the gorier and darker aspects of such supernatural creatures and surprises us with a very human hero who just happens to have certain special abilities. The love story and the supernatural subplot complemented eachother well. My only real dissatisfaction was with the cover; a beefcake depiction of Kieran posing with his shirt shrugged off, looking for all the world like a chippendale thug. I was embarrassed to be seen with it. Krinard lived up to my expectations created from her first werewolf novel, Prince of Wolves -- I wonder if she plans on making this a trilogy? I think her fans would love to explore the hidden village of Valle Cache a bit further.

I admit I have read better. I loved the first book Prince of Wolves, and I had hoped that this one was going to be as good. Maybe it was because I kind of knew what to expect, because of the first book, so I wasn't too dazzled by this one. I still liked it though. I believed the characters cared about one another, and I was glad to read about an old friend in it. I recommend it, because for number two in the series it really was worth the read. Ms. Krinard does write an interesting tale, and has a vivid imagination. If you want to read something that is different than the oridinary this book is for you. But PLEASE read PRINCE OF WOLVES first.

4.0 out of 5 stars Paranormal werewolf romance, May 17, 2004

This review is from: Prince of Shadows (Mass Market Paperback)
Alexandra Warrington, first went to Minnesota as a child, where she struck a friendship with shadow, a young black wolf, during the summer holidays. 17 years later, she returns to Minnesota, as a wolf researcher. There she saves a black wolf, not knowing that he is the same wolf that she met many years ago, when her life was carefree. The next morning, she wakes up and the wolf has disappeared but finds a handsome stranger lying next to her in bed. Alexandra slowly realises that the stranger called Kieran Holt is the one and same black wolf called shadow. For Kieran Holt is no human, he is a werewolf, a shape shifter. Kieran has amnesia and cannot remember his past. Alexandra vows to help Kieran unravel the mystery that is his past. With murders occuring at places where Kieran has been to, Alexandra must help him to find his memory and to clear his name.

This is a fast paced story, which will keep you turning the pages, especailly the chase scene across Minnesota up into the Canadian provinces. Alexandra is not a typical beauty but Kieran sees through her physical scars and helps her to overcome her mental scars. Alexandra fights with all her might from falling in love with Kieran but succumbs after she overcomes her fears. The evil charachter of Joseph Arnoux is a true villain and you'll be jumping up and down rooting for Alexandra and Kieran to beat him. Plus we get to meet again the gorgeous Luke Gévaudan from Prince of Wolves. This is a great read and highly recommended for all paranormal romance readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm a new fan! Highly recommended, May 5, 2001
This review is from: Prince of Shadows (Mass Market Paperback)
Playing in the woods together and enjoying long summer days, Alexandra Warrington and Kieran Holt knew each other as children. Alex knew her playmate better as Shadow, the black wolf who dared to play with a ten-year-old girl. Unfortunately, a poacher kills Kieran's parents, leaving the young boy alone when Alex must leave the woods of her grandparent's home to return to her parents.

Alex returns to the Minnesota woods as wolf researcher years later. Likewise, Kieran cannot ignore the call of his past and returns to the woods remembering the young girl's promise of help. A werewolf, Kieran has wandered the lands for five years alone.

Alex wakes one morning to find a complete stranger in her bed, despite the long dormant sensual and erotic pleasure, she refuses to let a man into her heart or her bed. The death of her mother years ago, the tragic accident that left her face permanently scarred, her father's rejection and the breakup with her fiancé have insured that Alex never intends to let anyone close to her but her beloved wolves. When a mysterious murder from five years previous ties to another death shortly after her arrival, Alex finds herself committed to helping Kieran at all costs.

Tinges of mysticism, and liberal doses of the paranormal make PRINCE OF SHADOWS an unusual and fascinating read. As the characters develop, I couldn't help being drawn into the tale and empathizing with the challenges each character must face. With an intensity and passion seldom matched, PRINCE OF SHADOWS.

4.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful read!, June 22, 2000
This review is from: Prince of Shadows (Mass Market Paperback)
Prince of Shadows is a riveting novel that embraces the livesof Alexandra Warrington and Kieran Holt, two souls who societythreatens to tear apart, but were meant to be. I didn't just connect with characters, but was genuinely touched by each of their lives. Sue Krinard has an amazing ability to weave a fine tale, a story that compels the reader and reaches into their heart. The details and aspects of the wolf's life were an interesting facet that added another layer to this already intriguing story. Prince of Shadows is a wonderful read filled with passion, need, and love.

They met as children, the young Alexandra and Kieran. However, Alex only knew Kieran as her young wolf, Shadow. On the day she is to go back home, she witnesses the killing of two wolves by a poacher. However, she recognizes the wolves as Shadow's parents. She is afraid for Shadow and that she cannot find him. Instead, she finds a boy, Kieran Holt, grieving over the dead wolves. She promises to help him, but her parents take her away before she can do so.

Alex goes back as an adult, but she now bears scars from an accident. She has become a reclusive wolf researcher. She hears rumors about a black wolf that some people blame for cattle killing and the death of a young girl. However, she also hears proof that not a wolf but a man caused the girl's death; so, she wants to help the wolf being hunted. Then she wakes up to find a naked man in her bed...who could it be, hmmm?

Read as Kieran and Alexandra come to face their fears: Alex about her "ugliness", and Kieran about the "beast" within. Both help each other to see more clearly. But what can they do about the new murders that point to Kieran as murderer? Is Kieran the murdering beast? read and find out!

This was one of my favorite so far of Susan Krinard's books. Loved that man! Gotta love the man on the jacket though...mmm..mm!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good "Were" Story, March 10, 2004
By
Elizabeth "lking173" (Los Angeles, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Prince of Shadows (Mass Market Paperback)
This is my first novel by Susan Krinard and it will not be my last. I really enjoyed this "were romance." Alexandra Warrington first met "Shadow" her best friend and wolf when she was a young girl. Now years later, she is physically and mentally scarred and returning to her grandparent's home to conduct research on "wolves." At her grandparent's home, Alex finds a hurt wolf and takes him home with her. The next morning Alex discovers her wolf gone, and a man in her bed with no memory of who he is. At first, Alex panics but she soon discovers that this man is in actuality her wolf. Alexandra decides to help him discover what happened to him to make him lose his memory. Also, during this time Alex finds herself growing attracted to him. Still, she has to be careful because a murder has also occurred that has all the markings of a "large wolf." This is a very good story. I connected with the heroine and really enjoyed her. I would recommend.
