But if you are a Prince fan this is simply a MUST have and IMHO blows the purple rain concert right out of the water. The music and imagery are just simply supurb. Solid from beginning to end you dont want to miss this one. Get this before it goes out of print and see Prince in one of his best performances.

2.0 out of 5 stars AN EGREGIOUS ASSAULT ON A GREAT ARTIST, February 15, 2005

This review is from: Prince Sign "O" the Times (DVD)
I have waited for a long time for this film, the greatest of concert films in my opinion, to be released on DVD. I waited with anticipation for the arrival of it after ordering it on here.
To my chagrin, I was terribly disappointed with the sound quality on this DVD. This is simply unacceptable to those of us who have admired the musicianship and artistry of Prince over the last twenty five plus years.
Prince has given us so much great music over the last three decades and deserves so much better than this third rate bootleg.
Having gotten that out of the way, Let me now say that I still think this is a must have item for any true fan of "the purple one."
This is without a doubt the greatest performance by Prince on film. Highlights include the title track, along with incendiary versions of "Housequake," "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man," and an acoustic guitar driven verion of "Forever In My Life," that is by far superior to the studio version.
The interaction between Prince and his bandmates is unbelievable here, especially when he switches with Sheila E. on drums while she takes over as MC on the rap portion of "It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night." Bassist Levi Seacer Jr., Cat Glover, Matt Fink and Boni Boyer also turn in some wonderful performances.
The concert footage here is also interjected with video clips that really help spice things up.
Also included is Prince's duet with Sheena Easton, "U Got The Look," which is the only song not performed live. Prince and Sheena sizzle on this video. One may wonder after viewing their interaction, what kind of chemistry was really happening on that set.
Overall, in spite of the poor sound quality, this is still an item worth having for any true fan of Prince or of great music in general.
I sincerely hope that Warner Brothers or whoever the powers that be are, will in the future make an attempt to rectify this poor representation of this great artist.
Do the right thing Warner Brothers and release this one remastered with the sound quality the artist intended it to have.
The world is awaiting.

While this is widely recognized as a superb concert movie, the quality of this DVD is very poor. The picture's not great. The sound is appalling.

5.0 out of 5 stars Look North....While You Can, January 20, 2009
This review is from: PRINCE Sign O' the Times (DVD)
There are a number of "copies" of this 1987 concert film floating around that are not authorized releases and are essentially very mediocre bootlegs. This DVD is an authorized Canadian release from Alliance Atlantis Communications, but is now unfortunately out-of-print.

Due to his growing popularity in Europe and needing a boost in album sales in the U.S., Prince filmed six 1987 concerts in the Netherlands and Belgium for this project. The footage was deemed unusable due a number of technical problems. To move things forward, Prince held a concert at his Paisley Park Studios, with 12 of the 13 tracks (one is a music video) used for the film. The performance sizzles, with Prince delivering a truly memorable show in an intimate setting in Chanhassen, Minnesota.

Released nationally in November 1987, the film did not have great box-office success, but gained a new beginning when issued domestically on VHS. It is puzzling why an authorized domestic DVD remains unavailable. Alliance Atlantis has had several ownership changes in the past several years, which could permanently end the production of its excellent DVD.

But this DVD is the one to grab...while you still can.

5.0 out of 5 stars Prince's Concert Film Still Stands of All Time, September 25, 2010

This review is from: PRINCE Sign O' the Times (DVD)
This film needs to be released in the US cause Prince is a brillant performer. I remember this film when it came out in the summer of 1987. My friends and I went to check this concert film and the energy and performance then is still just as brillant today. But Prince rocks with U Got The Look, Hot Thing & the Guitar solo of I'll Never Take The Place of Your Man rocks hard. Overall everyone Prince showcases his talents in every way you known from his early days from Purple Rain to the present. This is a winner that your friends and family will enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Make Sure You Buy The Canadian Edition!!!, May 7, 2006

I don't know why the better version of this dvd was sold only in Canada. Makes no sense to me. But all of you who want to buy this make sure you get the Canadian version. It has a better digital transfer and 5.1 sound. The whole show looks great except for the U Got The Look video they stuck into the middle of the film..It's grainy and low quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Princely Concert Film, December 3, 2010

If you were fortunate enough to see its original theatrical release, Prince's "Sign 'O' the Times" (1987) truly rocked the big screen. His Royal Badness and Company kick out the jams for a high-energy performance. The Sheila E. drum solo is one for the ages - along with flat-out brilliant renditions of "Hot Thing" and "Forever in My Life." Prince's finest 85 minutes on celluloid.

Hands down, this is simply one of the greatest concert films ever made. It features Prince when he was at the height of his creativity and the apex of his physical "dancetivity." This man is a tornado in concert (even still). If you've never seen Prince live (or even if you have) this movie is really a must. Skip over Michael Jackson's "This Is It," because folks, THIS is it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't believe this DVD is still NOT available in the States!, August 7, 2009
This review is from: PRINCE Sign O' the Times (DVD)
I'm very happy that I found this DVD from Prince's amazing career.
All of his (4)movies are available (and have been for sometime now) on DVD in the US EXCEPT this concert film.
This, being his 2nd best film after "Purple Rain" & probably one of the best concert movies ever.
Unfortunately, his other movies are not nearly as good as "Sign O'the Times" & "Purple Rain".
Which is why I don't understand the reason it's STILL NOT available on DVD in the States.
Well, a friend suggested I look for it online & he was correct.
I had to go to my neighbor in Canada to find it & Thank God I did.
And Thank U, my Canadian neighbor & fellow Prince fan.
I just hope it becomes available in the US on DVD soon so that it can be digitally remastered or whatever, so the sound quality can be made sharper & better on certain songs like "Forever in My Life", "U Got the Look" & "If I was your Girlfriend.
Other than that, I'm very happy with my purchase.
If any other Prince fans anywhere, especially in the States, don't have this DVD or haven't seen this great concert film, please do.
Please find it, order it, buy it, own it & watch it immediately.
It's another gem in Prince's priceless career.

This review is from: PRINCE Sign O' the Times (DVD)
This without a doubt a great concert film. Prince is in top form. Sheila E is great on the drums. She could give any drummer a run for their money. The instrumental parts are well done and the ending was great. This film is for any Prince fan.
