Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-3–There once was a king who could not tolerate noise. The commotion at his son's birth was so great that he called for Silencio! which became the prince's name. The boy grows up, and the king charges him with enforcing the Law of Silence. Silencio's presence among his subjects causes pauses and great gaps in conversations. When the king finally dies, the kingdom explodes in dancing and boisterous chatter. Silencio tries to join the fun, but the people reject him until they realize the importance of the silence …between the laughter and the songs. Between the words. Unique illustrations fill the pages with a cacophony of color, pattern, and texture. The king, represented by a large face in the shape of a castle, stands tall above the buildings in his realm. Silencio is dressed in white in contrast to the brightly colored crowd. Some pictures also contain words running together and flowing from the chattering crowd. The quirky and symbolic details of the illustrations will be best appreciated by individual readers. However, the size and color of the artwork and the simple text make this a good book to share with groups.–Carolyn Janssen, Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, OH

5.0 out of 5 stars An entertaining tale of passion, exile, acceptance, and enjoyment, July 13, 2006
This review is from: Prince Silencio (Hardcover)
Ably translated by Claudia Zoe Bedrick, Prince Silencio is charmingly written and brilliantly illustrated by Anne Herbauts, an acclaimed children's author and illustrator with at least seventeen books to her credit, and who divides her time between Belgium and France. Carrying young readers through the an intriguing plot in which the prince's father, intolerant of noise, orders him to keep the people quiet. What follows is the young prince's discovery of his love for noise and his attempt to join the loud celebration of the people when the king has died. Distinctively illustrated throughout and a welcome addition to school and community picturebook collections for children preschool through kindergarten, Prince Silencio is very highly recommended as a purely enchanting and thoroughly entertaining tale of passion, exile, acceptance, and enjoyment.

I loved how she was able to carry out the story in a rich visualization. final touches to the detail of the illustrations were superb. Like the cover page with the uv spot coating was great. Every illustrator should buy this book.
