Editorial Reviews

Prince of Space aka "Yusei Oji" aka "Starman"

When aliens from the barren rock planet Krankor attack Earth, only the curiously-costumed Prince of Space (aka Wally the shoeshine boy in disguise) and his trusty exhaust-spewing rocketship can save the world-- or at least Japan-- from total conquest by the evil Phantom and his beak-nosed minions. Since conventional space weapons cannot harm the spry Prince of Space, the Phantom engages in a kidnapping scheme involving a cadre of international scientists.

Invasion of the Neptune Men aka "Uchu Kaisoku-sen"

In another case of galactic conquest, clunky metallic aliens from the planet Neptune invade Earth-- or at least a quaint field in rural Japan-- only to have their efforts thwarted by caffeinated superhero Space Chief (venerable action hero Sonny Chiba of Kill Bill and The Streetfighter fame), who travels from situation to head-scratching situation in a boxy space car when not befriending a group of geeky boys.

After all the reviews I've read of the two movies that make up this DVD I expected them to be abysmal failures along the lines of Plan Nine From Outer Space. Well, yes, they are both in the "so bad it's good" category, and I haven't seen the MST3000 treatments (I imagine they are hilarious) but Prince of Space and Invasion of the Neptune Men are a hoot, and this DVD with vintage drive-in movie interstitials and trailers is a lot of fun. Honestly, I think if I had seen these when I was seven or eight years old, back in those pre-Star Wars days, I would loved them on their own terms as good old-fashioned space operas. Bonus points for a 21-year-old leotard-clad Sonny Chiba in Neptune Men.

"Prince of Space" is a hilariously madcap cheap Japanese drive-in flick about Wally the shoeshine boy whose secret identity is the eponymous masked "Prince of Space." While Clark Kent works at the Daily Planet, Bruce Wayne is a reclusive gazillionaire, and Peter Parker a nerdy guy... Wally shines shoes and acts as a "mother and father" to a couple of bratty kids. Soon, however, Wally finds himself in the battle to save the world from extremely aquiline-nosed aliens (with their obnoxiously chuckling ringleader, the Phantom) from the planet Krankhor. The dialogue is ludicrous. The "special" effects will have you in stitches. The acting is so bad is laughable. Prince of Space knows how to choose incompetent enemies (and equally incompetent allies). As he repeatedly says, "Your guns are useless!" With or without MST3K's snarky remarks,"Prince of Space" saves the day with its cheesy dialogue, ludicrous costumes, and sub-par acting. Enjoy!

OK, 5 stars may be a bit high, but I love these old Japanese Sci-fi tales. Godzilla, Mothra, et. al. hold a special place in my heart. I originally rented this from Netflix on a whim, but both of these films are quite good taken in this context. Some of the special effects are downright surprising, especially of buildings getting blown up by the marauding invaders; really! As for the acting, story, plots, etc., they are all entertaining in that they are mainly aimed at a younger audience and show a side of Japanese culture (for the time) that is interesting to see. Since I lived for about 3 years in Tokyo, I'm sure this has had an effect on my viewing of these movies. They are both done in B&W, but the quality of the prints used is quite good. Check them out if you have any interest in Japanese monster sci-fi movies. I think you will be surprised!

ok,so these two aren't star wars or even far out space nuts(if you don't know what that show is check it out here),but they are so cheesey that they can be fun. my boys have fallen in love with these two over the top space heros from japan. "prince of space" has our hero(who hides as wally the shoeshine boy in disguise)taking on the phantom(with bird like features)as he tries to take over the world. super silly but great fun if you are up for it or you have young kids. " invasion of the neptune men" has robots from neptune tring to take over the world and this time a superhero space chief figts them. this one is even more fun and even has a young sonny chiba (streetfighter) as the hero. great fun! so get over your self and sit back with your kids and get lost in the cheese and enjoy.

both of these films were featured on mst3k. i like to see some of the mst3k movies without the commentary and this is a quality release to experience two ridiculous bad movies in such a manner.

I could enjoy these two films with my eyes closed. The dialogue is priceless. But it's even better when you watch the homemade sets and special effects.

This movie may top "Plan 9 From Outer Space" as the worst movie of all time! Back in the early 1970's we used to have "Prince of Space" parties at our home and invite all our friends to come over and enjoy this terrible and corn ball movie when it appeared on the local TV station's Late Night Movie! Our friends would double over with laughter!! Try it!! It is great fun! Your small children may find this movie entertaining.
