This series would have been so much better if the author took as much care with language and syntax as she did with her historical re-write (which I for one approve). It is bad enough that the Welsh characters from the thirteenth century talk and think using modern language. The author further insults our intelligence, the Prince explains words like ok as being American, which is the land that Prince Madoc discovered when he left Wales almost a century ago when he sailed away. In addition, she has the thirteenth century characters using words that were not a part of language until centuries later. Maybe I am being fussy but when I read medieval stories, I expect them to talk as they did then, not like people from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries and to have a little trouble understanding us.
Then there is the way that Meg and Anna and later David and Anna arrive, in vehicles that the Prince thinks is a marvelous chariot. If she had not had David and Anna arrive in the same way in her second book this could be more easily overlooked since the car that Meg and Anna arrived in sank into the swamp after the Prince and Goronwy rescue them. Goronwy is very loyal to his Prince and becomes a beloved father figure to little Anna so there is no danger of him telling how the two women arrived. However, years later when David and Anna arrive back in Wales it is during a battle and is witnessed by many on both sides.Read more ›
