This review is from: Prince Valiant in the New World Illustrated Hardcover (Hardcover)
This is an excellent edition. It is in very good shape and since it was published in 1956, that is a miracle, indeed!! The book is lovely and the dustcover is completely intact. The story itself is the very best of Hal Foster, the drawing are NOT in colour and they do NOT come from the Newspaper comic. Hal Foster did this as a stand-alone book[evidently there was a series of 6 volumes done by Hastings House in the mid-50's] but the story is from the comic strip in the late 40's.
Val is AT LAST done with dragging Aleta around the known world and realizes[DUH!]that he is in LOVE with her[and she with him]. So like a good early Christians and since they in North Africa, they decide to go to Rome to get married. Of course, they land in Italy JUST as the Vandals are sacking Rome, so they find nearby a nice retired old churchman to marry them. They then head for Thule to introduce Aleta to Val's father Aguar, the King of Thule. Sure enough, as soon as they land, an EVIL guy named Ulfrun see Aleta, falls insanely in love with her and abducts her and sails off in his ship!!![There is a running gag as Aleta drives Ulfrun crazy with her demands and generally just bossing him and his crew around]. Luckily, her serving gal, Katwin, sees the abduction and runs to tell Val. He and his gang of pals load up their Viking craft and go off in hot pursuit! The rest of the story is the hot pursuit and the eventual landing in Newfoundland and encountering the Native folks. Val gets Aleta back from Ulfrun by besting him in a duel and ends up forcing the Bad guy off a cliff! Because Winter is approaching, Val decides to stay over til Spring, especially after Aleta announces that she is going to have a baby! They make friends with the locals, the natives think Aleta with her blonde hair is some sort of Goddess of Nature. They have lots of fun building their own log cabin, looking at Niagara Falls, hunting and of course, Aleta has Arn![he uses the pommel of the Singing Sword as a teething ring!] There are many other adventures but get the book to read them, the illustrations are more than worth the price of admission!! And at the end, they do build a boat and start to return to Camelot but that's another story..... |
