Book Description

September 27, 2005
A brainy girl's first crush — on a certain British royal — leads to unexpected discoveries about life, loss, love, and loyalty in this hilarious, poignant, award-winning novel set in modern Berlin.

Nelly Sue Edelmeister knows exactly who she is: a skinny thirteen-year-old Berlin schoolgirl with thick glasses, a brain the size of the ENCYCLOPAEDIA BRITANNICA, and a brilliant career ahead in astronomy. But that's before she develops a hopeless crush on the handsome and newly bereaved Price William, future king of Great Britain. And it's definitely before she meets the odd but oddly attractive Maximilian Minsky — former New Yorker, full-out goth, and basketball ace — who is klutzy Nelly's last hope for making the school team before it heads off to Eton, England, and virtually into Prince William's arms. Meanwhile, Mom is pushing Nelly to do the bat mitzvah thing, and her parents are bickering day and night. Sometimes it seems like the no-nonsense Risa, their beloved, elderly family friend — a survivor of Germany's darker past — is the only one in the house who keeps Nelly sane.

With pitch-perfect insight into adolescent angst and infatuation, family tensions, and the experience of being Jewish in contemporary Berlin, Holly-Jane Rahlens paints a humorous and surprisingly moving portrait of a determined heroine posed to charm young readers across the globe. Includes a glossary of foreign terms.

From School Library Journal

Grade 7-10–Nelly Sue Edelmeister wants to be a princess, and she's not going to let the fact that she's a nerdy klutz keep her from her goal. The 13-year-old lives in modern-day Berlin where she alternates between sticking her head in a book and peering at the stars. She must also prepare for her bat mitzvah and deal with her overbearing Jewish-American mother (her understanding father is a Christian German) and the deterioration of her parents' marriage. Nelly's plan is to become a basketball star so that Prince William will fall instantly in love with her. To achieve her aim, she enlists the help of Maximilian Minsky, a former basketball captain who dresses like a vampire. Rahlens cleverly uses the game as a metaphor to depict both the girl's coming of age and of embracing her roots. Her evolution shows how quickly change can take hold, and her voice rings true as she deals with friends, family (including a wise substitute grandmother), love, and religion. The author's sprinkling of Yiddish, Hebrew, and German expressions throughout the story skillfully brings readers into the world of a young Jewish girl living in a country with a dark past. Highly engrossing and packed with emotion, humor, and distinct characters, this fast-paced work will grab readers from the start.–Erin Senig, Bronxville Public Library, NY

From Booklist

Gr. 5-8. Thirteen-year-old Nelly is crazy for Britain's Prince William, but how will a geeky, astronomy-loving, bat mitzvah-planning, German American girl meet her prince? When Nelly discovers that the school basketball team is traveling to England, she's certain that she can master the skills necessary to join them--even if she has to start from less than scratch. Then enter Max, who may be the real answer to Nelly's dreams, but while Nelly is cultivating her own romance, she has a front-row seat at her parents' breakup. The German setting and the references to a few words, such as marks (money) and doppelkopf (card game), which aren't included in the glossary at the end of the book, may cause some confusion, and at the outset Nelly sounds years older than her actual age. But after Max shows up, about a third of the way through the book, things pick up, and readers who have stuck it out (and can handle a few instances of mildly off-color language) will come away entertained. 4.0 out of 5 stars Prince William, Maximilian Minsky and Me, January 3, 2007
This review is from: Prince William, Maximilian Minsky and Me (Hardcover)
Nelly Sue Edelmeister is a thirteen year old girl with more than usual teenage angst. A self-described "nerd," bright and introspective beyond her years, Nelly lives in Berlin with her American Jewish mother ("I left New York but it never left me!") and her wayward yet loving German Christian father. She is surrounded by problematic parents, an all-wise substitute grandmother, a Jewish senior citizen support group and a shifting coterie of colorful friends. The only constant in her life is her obsessive infatuation with Prince William, heir to the British throne. The story is well crafted and written, with Nelly - conflicted about her forthcoming Bat-Mitzvah - coping with issues of religion, death, friendship and family dysfunction. The story line is imaginative and realistically told and provides readers with a teenager's insight into being Jewish in contemporary Berlin. The story is written in the first person with punchy dialog that includes some blunt and suggestive - but not gratuitous -language. Nelly is a multi-dimensional individual whose words and thoughts realistically mirror those of a sensitive and conflicted teenager. Other characters, though, sometimes appear as caricatures or stereotypes. A glossary is provided for the Jewish words that pepper the story. Teenage girls will particularly enjoy it. Recommended for ages 12-14.

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming book for 12-13 year old girls, September 16, 2009
12-13 year olds who are contemplating the day they become a Bat Mitzvah should love this book. Different insight than usual. Beginning may be slow but it really picks up afterwards.
