Book Description

Jacque Pierce was just an ordinary 17 year old girl getting ready to start her senior year in high school in Coldspring, Texas. When a mysterious foreign exchange student from Romania moves in across the street, Jacque and her two best friends, Sally and Jen, don't realize the last two weeks of their summer was going to get a lot more interesting. From the moment Jacque sets eyes on Fane she feels an instant connection, a pull like a moth to a flame. Little does she know that the flame she is drawn to is actually a Canis Lupus, werewolf, and she just happens to be his mate; the other half of his soul. The problem is Fane is not the only wolf in Coldspring, Texas. Just as Fane and Jacque are getting to know each other, another wolf steps out to try and claim Jacque as his mate. Fane will now have to fight for the right to complete the mating bond, something that is his right by birth but is being denied him by a crazed Alpha. Will the love Fane has for Jacque be enough to give him the strength to defeat his enemy, will Jacque accept that she is Fane's mate and complete the bond between them?

3.0 out of 5 stars Torn between a 3 and a 4 September 15, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I love the idea behind the book:

Jacque is a normal 17 year old girl from a small town in Texas. She lives with her mother, her father left before she was born and she has two best girlfriends, Jen and Sally. Her normal life changes when a foreign exchange student moves in with her neighbors next door and starts talking to her through her thoughts. She finds out she's actually half-werewolf and the mate of the Romanian werewolf (grey wolf in this case) tribe's Prince. Just when she has come to terms with her new role, they find out that an unknown werewolf tribe exists in her small town and that the Alpha wants her as his.

The reason I struggle between a 3 and a 4 is because while I do enjoy the storyline and SOME of the characters...I HATE the dialogue. I love the sarcasm and humor in this book but the dialogue is too much. It's hard for me to focus on the gravity of any particular situation or the intimacy of it with the dialogue the way it is.

Jen, Jacque's outgoing, loud-spoken best friend is constantly making jokes and saying inappropriate things, at first it was entertaining...that thought did not last through the entire book. Also, it wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the way the characters talked. For example, a quote from Jen: "Hold on, put on the brakes, throw it in park, and set the emergency breaks while you're at it. Did you just say centuries?" It's just too much. Overboard. Like I said, a few times is fun and entertaining... throughout the entire book, especially during important, serious parts just kind of kills it.
Also, the reactions they have (dialogue-wise) to certain events that are supposed to be scary for them just can't be taken seriously due to their reaction. Let's say something happens that completely surprises you and is rather scary. "Oh S@HT!" (which is how the author wrote it) is an appropriate enough reaction. The reaction of the two other girls "I second that!" and "I third it"....don't quite convey the same level of fear or surprise. It's what you would see in some kind of comedy and really takes away from the intensity of the moment.
What really bothers me is when the girls say things like 'true dat' or 'chilax' or call each other 'chick' and 'sista'. They just didn't seem to belong in this kind of a story, and don't sound natural written like this. Also, the first time Jacque meets Fane's (her mate) parents (the king and queen of the Romanian tribe) she actually says "I'm sorry you're seeing me all sleepified and stuff." Some examples of Jacque talking to Fane's mother and queen "Yea, I suppose he has been a little preoccupied with the whole crazy, psycho, alpha trying to get in his kool aid and steal his chick.", "Ok, you're right it is freaky-deaky to me..." She could've just left it at freaky...that would've been ok, freaky-deaky...a little less so.

Anyhow, the book is absolutely littered with stuff like that, you can hardly go a page without running into several examples. The story is good, I don't entirely regret reading it, the dialogue is stopping me from continuing to read the series. While I appreciated the humor and sarcasm the author put into her work, it was overdone and unfortunately made it hard to really fall into the story enough to want more. What makes the situation worse is the stark contrast between the way the other characters in the book speak. Other characters speak much more formally in comparison and makes things even more awkward. As I wrote this review I changed the rating to a 3 because after going over it...the dialogue really ruined it for me.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice but not much more August 16, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
As a whole I love werewolves' stories and I was really happy to find a YA romance book with the concept of werewolves' mates. Now I must confess I regret buying this one. The start was good but after some chapters I found myself becoming less and less interested in the story and more annoyed with the style itself and its flaws. First of all the editing was not good enough, there were pretty flagrant grammatical mistakes and some badly written sentences that made me itch.
Also I couldn't get interested in Fane. For a hero he was almost too good and I found him very flat. The two characters lacked depth.
I liked the fact that the author let us know what the H thinks as much as the h but the method of changing points of view was problematic. The reader is forced time and again to relive twice the same scene. It was interesting and romantic with the scene of their first meeting : first from her point of view then his but when it's the scene where Fane is introduced to Jacque's mom and friends it's really pointless to live it twice. Why rewrite a scene that was not very good in the first place when you could just go forth and back from his to her point of view? It would have created a more natural description. About the scene in itself I felt like Fane was a little bit too polite, it all felt very forced and strange.
All in all it could have been a good book but I was just unable to overlook those flaws and really appreciate it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Really Tried My Best To Like This Book July 18, 2012
By Paige
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
One of the only reasons that I got this book was because it was free. I would've bought another book, but I didn't have any money at the time to make any other purchases.

First off, I would like to say that the grammatical errors in this book was absolutely terrible. Words were spelled wrong in every which way. Normally that wouldn't bother me if there were only a couple of words wrong, but this was a constant mistake. Sentences didn't even always end. They would just continue to go on as if there had been punctuation in a spot.

Another problem was that the whole book itself was poor. While reading this book, I kept having to put my Kindle down and ask myself: "Who would really talk like this, and actually do this in itself?"

I felt that the book was written by a middle school student. How the book was written, it reflected what was taught to students when they are learning to write. Someone would ask a question, and the answer that would be in response: "Well, yes actually, I did (Restates the question)..."

I could write more to why I disliked this book, but if you want to read this, you probably wouldn't really read the negative reviews that are written.

I just wanted to say that I did try to like this book, and I read all of it, I would not recommend this book to anyone.
