Werewolf Romance at its Best!,
This review is from: Prince of Wolves (Mass Market Paperback)
I found Susan Krinard's books quite by accident. At the local ubs I was in a "vampire" mood and came across Prince of Dreams by Susan which was the story of a vampire told in a very unique way. Although I did enjoy the story - enough for me to search out her other titles, nothing prepared me for Prince of Wolves. A hauntingly beautiful love story that will stay with you for a very long time. Susan's writing is extremely detailed, very informative and flows quite easily. Her stories are longer than most but I consider that a plus!Prince of Wolves is a story about werewolves, as a race. It is also about love and happily ever after but more importantly it is the story of possibilities. This is not some far-fetched, way out there type book about some evil beings... it is well-written and almost (I do stress the almost) makes you want to believe in the possibility of a race of this kind. Intense and powerful with a plot that will continually surprise you. Joelle Randall was a strong heroine with normal human weaknesses. She had beauty, grace and intelligence (a requirement in every heroine as far as I am concerned) but what she also had was faith. Her trust in what could not be possible gave her a sort of inner glow that was both positive and alluring. Luke Gévaudan. Well what can you say about a man that is part wolf... Sexy doesn't cover it! He was a legend come true and he made you believe in the impossible! He was clever, he was strong and loving and power just oozed out of his pores. I absolutely fell in love with everything about this book. All of the characters, main, secondary, villain... everyone played an important role and each voice was crucial to the story. Susan has a unique way of blending a story together and thankfully this book has sequels! Prince of Shadows, Touch of the Wolf and Once a Wolf. If you're in the mood for something wild, read Prince of Wolves!

Prince of Wolves,

Being an avid wolf lover and romance book reviewer made me pick up this book. Ms. Krinard's talent and style, along with her clear, precise knowledge of wolves and people, kept me engrossed until the end of the book. Her expertise is laying the foundations of her characters and cutting right to their minds and the heart of their emotions. She uses the wolf (or werewolf) as a backdrop for her books, capturing their spirit, essence, power and mystery. She uses the beast for comparison of the power of all the senses and the wildness of desires, needs and instincts that we all have within us. She delves deep into the minds and hearts of her characters, dragging every emotion out of them, only to bring them to their knees during the struggle to survive, protect, overcome fear, avenge hate and even search for love. Joelle ran from her past, then confronts it, along with her fears and weaknesses, hoping to overcome them and find her inner strength and go on. Luke is the ultimate loner, unable to let down his guard and allow trust and love in his life while hiding his secret. Ms. Krinard takes them through a journey of discovering where each fits into the bigger picture. In spite of little chance for the two to survive the dangers they can pose to the other, the attraction cannot be denied. She places them at odds with intensity, sensuality and a constant inner battle not to give in to the animal urges and basic instincts to come together. Ultimately, they have to team up and learn trust if either is to survive the adventure. Krinard has a unique style and flair for capturing every emotion and using it to expose each strength, fear and weakness of her characters, only to bring them to their knees during the struggle to survive. Then she uses those very emotions to make them rise above their obstacles with dignity and reinvent themselves without losing what they were before. Do werewolves really exist? Is there really true love? Is there really a chance of finding one's soulmate and recognizing them before it's too late? I recommend reading Prince Of Wolves, as well as all Ms. Krinard's books to find out for yourself. You never know what you might learn about true human nature or yourself by the way she superbly uses emotions and her characters to tell her wonderful tales of fantasy. You never know just what she might may make you believe in. ;-)

I have read Sue Krinard's Prince of Wolves and I can't say enough about this book. I usually read my Romance Novels while I do my treadmill, and I actually did an extra 2 miles because I didn't want to stop reading. This book has everything a Romance Reader could possibly want in a book...I couldn't put it down. I recommend it to anyone who loves romance.

Contemporary werewolf romance,

This review is from: Prince of Wolves (Mass Market Paperback)
Joelle Randall goes to the Canadian rockies to confront her past, to find the place where her parents disappeared in a plane crash accident years ago. There she meets Luke Gevaudan, a mysterious man who is shunned and feared by the locals. Luke is a French Canadian and is also a werewolf. He's a loner and lives by himself in a cabin high up in the mountains. Joelle hires him to guide her through the rockies to find the crash site. During their trip, Joelle slowly finds herself attracted to Luke, despite his dangerous traits. Luke is a well known womaniser and has a reputation for charming the ladies to his cabin but noone knows what happens to these ladies afterwards. In Joelle he has found his soul mate and is afraid to fall in love with her because of the consequences. Once a werewolf finds his soul mate, he will be attached to her forever. Can Joelle and Luke keep going on denying their attraction for each other despite their growing feelings? This book is full of atmosphere and sexual tension. All of Susan Krinard's werewolves are devilishly attractive and handsome. They always hide a hidden past and Luke is no exception. There is loads of suspense and you will find yourself urging on Luke and Joelle to get together. Joelle is reluctant at first to fall for Luke until she finds a softer side in him. This is a great read and I definitely recommend it to all romance readers. Lealing

A GOOD WEREWOLF STORY,
By Reema Al (NJ,USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Prince of Wolves (Mass Market Paperback)
Wolves have always interested me and since i saw the movie WOLF i became a big fan for the supernatural romances. Prince of Wolves was a very wonderful emotional story, the details and description was so real. After reading the first few chapter Luke Gevaudan character irritated me because of his intention to Joelle, but as the story progressed Luke finally realizes he found his true soul mate. I always believed that a good writer knows how to let the reader's emotions come out and Susan Krinard is one of them.

A book with Substance,
By Lunazen (Arizona) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Prince of Wolves (Mass Market Paperback)
Very interesting reading the latest reviews of this book, and for the most part I must disagree. I think part of the problem for some peope, and I agree with a poster a few reviews down, is that most authors explain too much to the reader too soon. Not the case with this book, thankfully.
This is one of my all time favorite reads. I first read it the year it was published in 1994, and have read it several times since. My old copy was so beat up, I recently bought a new one. The pace of the book in my opinion is not slow at all. It is descriptive, sets the mood. When I read this book, I feel like I am right there with Joelle and Luke, in the middle of the vast Canadian wilderness which is the setting for this book. One of my criteria when I buy a book is that there must be paragraphs througout with NO dialogue. If it's just dialogue after dialogue, there is not enough substance and I put the book back on the shelf. This book has a wonderful balance of dialogue, mystery, suspense, action, mood-setting descriptions, emotional depth, romance, and of course fantasy. (I must mention here that Susan Krinard's later books following the werewolves were not as interesting to me, ie. "Touch of the Wolf" etc. Where the "Prince of Wolves" is filled from cover to cover with wonderfully detailed settings and character development, her next books were more focused dialogue and cheesy romance.) The "jumping around" that occurs is not without purpose. It is simply switching point-of-view between the hero and heroine. Not enough authors do this as far as I'm concerned. It is refreshing that the author allows the reader to see both sides of the story rather than only from the point of view of the female. In this case, the hero is far too deep a character to not let his voice be heard. Transitions of this nature can be confusing, but not in this book. Susan Krinard pulls it off beautifully. Joelle, or Joey as she is most commonly called, is a complex character. She knows what she wants and is determined to get it, and yet there is a vulnerable side to her. Luke is a very strong, sensual, mysterious, emotionally complex character. I absolutely love both of these well developed charatcers. At times, their emotion is mine. This is one of the rare books where I actually get the occasional lump in my throat and tears in my eyes. At other times, a smile on my face. Sometimes all three together! The conflict continues for most of the book, although there are small resolutions throughout. One reason I feel this book is so well written is that there is more than one conflict. Indeed this book covers them all. Man against man. Man against nature. And man against self. And while I often skip love scenes because they are just poorly written with phrases such as "Don't be afraid my dearest darling!", yack lol.. in "Prince of Wolves" these scenes are riveting, sensual, powerful, and add rather than detract from the story. If you enjoy nature, books with substance, emtional depth, a complex stroy line, fantasy romance, and not just "he said she said", this is the book for you.

Well I had to rate this on two levels. I liked most of the story, the plot was interesting which inticed me to buy the book in the first place but it seemed to ramble on and then would jump around that it was a bit confusing to read. I thought that the heroine was well done but the hero Luke was unrealized. The book took me days to get through because it tended to drag. I was hoping for more excitement and didn't get much. I have read others from this author and found them to be more thrilling and they held my interest throughout the whole book I wish this one had also.

I'm an animal lover and adore the majestic beauty of wolves. I also love reading paranormal romances and had not read one about wolves/werewolves before. This is a delightful novel that kept me entraced from page 1 until the end. Luc is a handsome, misunderstood hero and Joelle (Joey) is the perfect mate for him. Susan Krinard does a wonderful job of weaving this tale.

FANTASTIC story!,

This was the first Krinard novel I had ever read. This was the one that brought me back to her time and again. I was so incredibly drawn into the story. I very much enjoy how she incorporates this supernatural/paranormal activity with the characters, all of whom were well-developed, might i add..she made them come alive. The reason I love Krinard so much is because she is unlike any other romance novelist. Her stories are new, unpredictable, and overall, just extremely well done. This is a definite MUST MUST read! :)

Excellent Shapeshifter Romance!,
By May Tyler (Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Prince of Wolves (Mass Market Paperback)
I find myself confused after reading some of the extrememly negative reviews of this book.
I read a TON of books, particularly romance (hey, you haven't lived 'til you've lived vicariously!) and I found Prince of Wolves to be extremely refreshing. The descriptions of the landscape were lush and vivid, and the romance was allowed to develop gradually enough so that it didn't seem feigned or unbearably cheesy. I found the character development to be strong, and any ambiguity of motives was clearly resolved in due time. Many authors make the mistake of making things too obvious, in my opinion, which robs a romance of its humanity. After all, people are nothing if not complicated, and coming to know a character gradually keeps me, at least, from becoming bored. Yes, there is a very sexual aspect to this book, but it really is secondary to the emotional content, and it's easy enough to skim over those parts if you don't like it. I read this book in two sittings, and can't wait to read more from Krinard. If you like supernatural romance, and you crave strong viusals and real characters, I completely recommend this book! |
