Better than I expected...,

This review is from: The Princess and the Barrio Boy (DVD)
My wife rented this, but unlike some of her other choices, I actually watched to the end. The broad outlines of the story are a typical girl meets boy-from-wrong-side-of-the-tracks love story, but there are a few surprises and a few laughs along the way. Other than a few absurdly over-the-top performances (Sirena's friends, and Pauly Shore) the cast is competent and enjoyable to watch. So if you're thinking of renting, it's worth seeing once. Cute story. If you're thinking of buying the DVD, though, note that it's probably overpriced. There's no main title screen. The DVD starts with ads for other films that you can fast forward through but can't skip entirely, and there's no main title screen at all; the movie just starts right in after the ads are done. In addition, while the movie is full-frame, fitting for a made-for-TV movie, there's an annoying line of artifacts at the top of the screen through the whole thing. To sum up: A decent rent, but a terrible buy.

Feel Good Movie,

This was such a feel-good and heartwarming film. It was so nice to finally view a movie with strong emphasis on family values. I highly recommend this movie for every member of the family.

Wonderfully acted, entertaining story about a young girl mourning the death of her mother and trying to come to terms with dad's (Edward James Olmos) new girlfriend. (The delightfully wicked Maria Conchita Alonso.) A funny, light comedy the whole family can watch. It is also a great film to show in a high school class, it will encourage dialogue about classism, racism, and interestingly, how members of the same minority group can judge each other so harshly. Top notch acting, beautifully filmed. Rent it or buy it! It is well worth it. Kudos to Tony Plana (he's appeared in An Officer and a Gentleman, Sweet 15) for directing this engaging film.

I just want to say that this movie was the best movie i have seen in a long time. We watched it in my spanish class and we all loved this movies, even all we had to do questions, they were easy, and it helped me not to judge people by what they are and what they have, but by the inside of the person!

Good, clean romance movie,

If you're looking for a somewhat predictable "chick flick," this one's perfect. My wife lets her Spanish students watch this movie every year, because it's clean and gives insight into the Spanish culture and language. The story follows the "Romeo and Juliet" theme in modern times.

A GOOD FILM TO DO LAUNDRY BY!...,

I had High Hopes when I got this Movie with such terrific Cast and all...This is the Story of two Mexican Families living in Los Angeles all their lifes, one Rich one Poor...Wow that's a new Premise ...Some Characters in the Film never had eaten nor seen Mexican Food before, if you can believe that!...Well, it gets even better, how about Pauly Shore playing the part of some Flamboyant Interior Decorator with a Bad Beehive Blond Wig muttering some High School Spanish every now and then...or was it French?...Well, it doesn't matter, Yes, you know the Rest.
"The Princess and the Barrio Boy" has a lot of problems, it has it's good moments but unfortunately not many of them, it's one of those Films you watch while doing something ells...like Laundry or...Folding Sheets, so it doesn't seem like you're wasting your time, in fact by the time the Movie Ended, I have done Thee Loads!

This is a cute movie and very age appropriate. I must admit, it has been several years since I watched it but I did really like it.

I had purchased a copy before online and it was horrible. In the middle of the DVD, another show came on. It was strange, but we ordered through my school district so didn't know how to send it back. This is a great movie to show because it is a wealthy Mexican-American family--not the normal stereotypical one. The boys and girls both enjoy it! They are 8th graders.

Rich Girl Meets Poor Boy,

Latina from "the right side of the tracks" meets young man from modest family in East L.A. Subplot with scheming stepmother-to-be is too over-the-top, but otherwise a sweet movie, perfect for pre-teens and teens and anyone else who loves fairy tales.

A cross between a West side Story and Romeo and Juliet,
By Ashley H (Philly) - See all my reviews

Its was a cute little movie but not intriguing as I thought. It delt with the spanish culture. About a rich girl meeting a boy who lived in east LA and her father and friends thought he was trouble. And there were other conflicts in the movie, but not that much important. It was just a cute little movie to wacth if your ever bored.
