Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1-In the first story, Princess Buttercup lives in a magic garden with five other flower princesses. While preparing for a party on the first day of spring, she gets lost in the woods following a butterfly. The friendly monarch picks her up and returns her to the garden in time for the festivities. Youngsters will be drawn to the brightly hued cover and fanciful art. The pace of life in Snail City is nice and slow-until Gail is born. Called "fast poke" by the other snail children, she is considered a bit odd until her quick actions save a baby. Children will enjoy the humor and the cartoon art. Both books have large type, easy vocabulary, and lots of repetition that will help develop and reinforce their reading skills.

1.0 out of 5 stars Caution to Parents, January 19, 2008
By
Jill Roberta (New Haven, Connecticut) - See all my reviews
"There is going to be a party.
Princess Lily and Princess Tulip set the table.
Princess Rose gets the band ready.
Princess Hyacinth makes a cake.
Princess Iris plays ball.
She does not like to work.
She likes to play."

Princess Iris is the only black fairy, and she is shown shooting a large pea through a spiderweb hoop -- an early introduction to latent racism for young children.

4.0 out of 5 stars No Racism (latent or otherwise) In This Book (as claimed by previous comment), January 2, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I purchased this book from Amazon Dec. 2008. My copy of the book says:

"There is going to be a party.
Princess Lily and Princess Tulip set the table.
Princess Rose gets the band ready.
Princess Hyacinth makes a cake.
PRINCESS IRIS MAKES UP A GAME TO PLAY AT THE PARTY.
But where is Princess Buttercup?" (Caps are mine for emphasis, not in the book)

My book only shows one publication date (2001) and the wording given in Jill Roberta's review is NOT in my copy of the book. In fact, there is no racist-leaning wording (latent or blatant) or illustrations. In fact, I'm quite happy that there is at least one fairy who is not white (although with that many flower princesses there could have been more of other ethnicities).

Also, the book is sweet and my daughter loves princesses, so it is a good fit for her on an early reading level. The story also teaches fortitude and shows Princess Buttercup staying calm when she is in a difficult situation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for young readers, July 23, 2007
My daughter loved this book! It has precious pictures and a nice story line. It doesn't feel contrived like many of the early readers do. My 3 year old daughter enjoyed listening to her big sister read this story. The story is about a flower fairy (Princess Buttercup) who follows a butterfly and ends up getting lost. The butterfly gives her a ride back home, just in time for a party the princess flower fairies are throwing to celebrate the beginning of spring. I wish there were more stories about these flower fairies for early readers.
