A feisty and clever Cinderella,
By slomamma (San Luis Obispo, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Princess Furball (Paperback)
There are more than five hundred variations on the Cinderella story. This one has the most interesting "Cinderella" character that I know of. There's no fairy godmother, although there is an old nurse who teaches her all she needs to know "to be strong and capable and clever, besides being beautiful." Using her wits and skills, she escapes an arranged marriage to an ogre, and wins the love of a handsome prince. I think it's a much better message for little girls than some of the baggage that comes from the French version of Cinderella that most of us grew up on. And Anita Lobel's illustrations are unusual and charming.

An Excellent Cinderella Story,
This review is from: Princess Furball (Paperback)
This book is a variant of the story of Cinderella. In this book, the heroine doesn't rely on a fairy godmother to help her, she plans ahead and helps herself. This has been a favorite for my daughters and myself for years!

Princess Furball is a wonderful Cinderella story that is beautifully written. The illustrations delight children. I use this book when I teach a Fairy Tale unit to my 3rd graders. They enjoy comparing this book to other Cinderella tales. Princess Furball is always a class favorite.

The Story that Makes Me Happy,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Princess Furball (Paperback)
I am five years old and I thought Princess Furball by Charlotte Huck was so good it should have gotten an award. One reason that I liked it was because it has very good pictures in it. It is about a princess that ran away from her home because her dad was going to make her marry an ogre! If you want to find out what happens, please read the story.

I have been searching for this book for years! I read it one time when I was about 8 years old, and fell in love with the story. Many years later, after forgetting the title and author, I have finally found it! I have spent countless hours searching for this book on-line and in bookstores. Princess Furball is a wonderful, inspiring version of Cinderella. I love that she isn't a damsel in distress that lets everybody do stuff for her, because in my mind that's not a heroine! Princess Furball has spunk!

Fantastic Fairy Tale,
By Kyna Fairge (Wisconsin) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Princess Furball (Paperback)
I have been trying to find a copy of this book for over a year. A librarian read it to my class when I was just a little kid and I loved it. Upon finding it on Amazon I remembered why...it was such a great story. Not your average princess, she uses resourcefulness and her wits to take charge of her fate. Now my best friend is expecting her first child and I am excited to have someone to get this book for.

This is one of my favorite stories from my childhood, and I was pleased to have purchased this book and read it to her. She loves the story and the different dresses that the princess wears. The item was in great condition and was shipped promptly.

I had this book when I was little and then sometime later I lost track of it... sometimes I wish I still had it because I LOVED the illustrations of this book.
The story itself is also memorable. A couple of parts remind me of Cinderella, but this story is very unique and fun, so it's not some boring rehash of something else. The illustrations really are fun to look at, and the story is well-written and paced.

Wonderful fairy tale!,

This is a fairy tale of the type "Persecuted Heroine". Now, of course, the most popular fairy tale of that type is Cinderella, but to call this story a variation on Cinderella is like calling English a variation on Dutch! They have the same theme, maybe even the same origin, but one is not a version of the other.
In this story, the girl isn't persecuted at home, she runs from it to avoid a bad marriage. She isn't saved by her fairy godmother, but by her cleverness and good home cooking. And nobody gets married based upon their shoe size. In short, it is a bit more... realistic than the more popular story you may have heard. |
